Unusual Early Snow Falling In NC Mountains

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - An unusually early season snow has begun
to fall across parts of the North Carolina mountains.
The National Weather Service says snow showers started to fall
Saturday afternoon above 3,000 feet in the far western part of the
state around the Smoky Mountains National Park.
Weather service meteorologist Patrick Moore says the snow
showers should increase as the day continues with as much as 3
inches falling in some areas.
Moore says the snow should stay out of the bigger mountain
cities in the valleys like Asheville.
The weather service says this is a few weeks early for the first
snow in the North Carolina mountains.

The Russians and the Chinese are screwing with the weather. Even the moonbats thought W created Katrina and effed up New Orleans.

I was at the 4000 ft elevation Saturday and got caught in it. I was near Albert Mountain.

I hope we don't get any more inquiries of whether or not hikers should carry winter gear in the south when they are hiking peaks 4000-6000 feet in the winter.
and I do wish that the hikers that started in jan would report back as to how wise that decision turned out. I'm am not referring to the experienced hiker that prefers winter hiking, but to the newbies that are trying to beat the crowds.

It was actually spitting a little snow Saturday PM on Blood Mountain in Georgia. No accumulation and very spotty, but it was cold, windy, and damp!!

I was camping on the small bald area at the top of Standing Indian Mt. on Friday night and had strong winds, temps in the 20s, and an inch of snow - very cold in my 35* bag. I had on every stitch of clothing I brought with me and still didn't sleep more than 30 minutes at a time without waking up shivering. Lesson learned, time to go shopping for warmer gear!

:sun I'm leaving in a couple minutes to hike NOC to Fontana. I skipped this section so I could finish close to home and hike it with a good friend.
It's warm and sunny here now but some snow would be nice!

I heard that last cold snap you folks had out there was due to your asking the little woman if she wanted some bigger pants for her birthday.:eek:
Hiked in snow flurries on the Lakeshore Trail in GSMNP Saturday. I slept warm in my Hennessey thanks to JRB's Nest & RMS.
One of our group suffered for bringing a 50* summer bag. Lesson was learned well not to under prepare.
I saw snow accumulation at the higher elevations.

cold, windy, and damp!!

I spent Friday at Mollies Ridge and Sat at Derrick Knob. Sat was horrible. We were all experienced hikers so we were prepared for cold but it was not much fun. The trail was dstroyed by horses and mix that with slush/mud/ice. It made a for a few long cold days. The limbs were had so much ice causing them to lean on the trail, you had to duck under them about every 25 yards. Went hoping to see fall colors and all were saw was fog and shades of white and gray.
We had a light dusting at Carter Gap Saturday night. It was a little deeper on Standing Indian. Driving home last night, we could see the mountain summits around Sylva and Waynesville glowing white on their shady sides. Gorgeous!

Just returned from a 3-day, 2-night backpack in the Smokies. The night before we started, we car-camped at Big Creek and awoke to 32 degrees - I wonder what it was like at the 5-6,000' level? Our second day we hiked to up Sterling Mountain to the tower where we saw patches of snow from about the 5,000' level up.
Each day got progressively warmer.
Two inches and 17 degrees greeted us on top of Le Conte. So I'll bear witness to the fact-yes Virginia, there is snow in the Smoky's in October.

My friend Creepy Uncle and I got back Wednesday night from our NOC to Fontana section. There was some snow on the ground up higher but most of it had already melted. The daytime temps were in the 60's but it felt more like 80's with the sun. I'm happy to be back in the south!
