View Full Version : Land's end down jacket

I saw someone mention this in another thread, but it deserved it's own post. Land's End has a new 700 fill down jacket this year that looks like it might make a good insulating layer. It's called the SnowPack 700, (http://www.landsend.com/pp/SnowPack700DownJacket%7E198978_59.html) packs into it's own pocket, and weighs 17oz for an xl, so less than a lb for a L. My email to cust. service got me the weight, they say they'll try to find out the fill weight from the manufacturing rep. I'll update if I get an answer.

Right now it's 100$, but earlier this week it was 80$ and I'm betting that after christmas we'll see them at 50-60. Looks like it might be a pretty good deal for discount shoppers/dirtbaggers.

Thanks for the heads up.

I've been watching for an affordable used montbell inner down jacket, with no luck (that you can't find one seems to be the gold standard for "authentic this is the best" rating)

This one might make an adequate stand in.

If anyone buys one, please report back.

Boy I hope so - this looked mighty good to me...just waiting for a price drop. Ladies version was 14 oz which is lighter then what I have now, and I like that it packs in its pocket which is compact and would fit nicely in my pack. I looked at it in my local Sears store.

My Lands' End down vest weighs 10 oz, so 17 for a full jacket sounds right. Good quality product, I've had my eye on that jacket, too...

Yep same thing happened two years in a row with LL Bean.

Looks a little trekky or Dune, yes that Patrick Stewart wearing a black version of the same thing.

For $50 I'd definately snap one up. I bought their cheapy 500 fill down vest for $30, excellent investment and much lighter than a fleece.

Looks a little better than the EMS Glacier jacket (http://www.ems.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3646493) that was $50 less than a year ago.

I have the EMS jacket. It is a pretty decent to good jacket, but a bit box for my tastes.

The Lands End looks more form-fitting (less dead air to heat up) and has slightly higher fill power.

Not too shabby.

Ditto on the Vests. I picked up 2 down vest 3 years ago on closeout for $19.99. Great Deal, though they seem to be a littel more than a pound in weight.

75$ today

Lands' End takes 25% off any regular-priced men's item, including jackets, sweaters, and coats, via coupon code "NOV2" and PIN "23237929". Plus, it also bags free shipping.

I'm holding out till after christmas, I'm shooting for 60$
I have their vest too, best 20 bucks I've spent on a new piece of outerwear. Bought a closeout one for my son for 15$ a few weeks ago.

hahahahah! i'm laughing because I, too, am watching for an affordable used montbell thermawrap.

but after hearing how you've been unsuccessful has hinted me to the likely truth: once we buy one, we won't ever sell it.

evidently they are worth the $$.

I bought my Montbell for $100 on sale. Got the heads up on the sale right here a year ago. Best money I ever spent on a jacket. (I spent lots more than that on a Marmot several years ago and lost it my first hike)

Got the new llbean catalog today.
On page 35 there is a goose down outer wear listing

They show a jacket, rated at 15 degrees, for 69 in regular sizes. Free shipping too. There is an extra zipper for a front chest pocket. No weight listed and no packing size description.

Does anyone already own one and care to take the time to comment?

I've owned some llbean stuff and it was pretty good.

Just a follow up if you don't pour over every post like i do<g><G>

In a separate post about the LLBEAN coat, Mags told us it is a winter coat, big and bulky. He even posted a picture of one in use.
http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55524

I'm beginning to think even the land's end coat will be pretty heavy duty. The temperature rating is comparable to the LLBEAN. It weighs 17 Oz, which is twice what a montbell weighs (8 oz versus 17 oz. prox.)

Maybe I'll finally learn my lesson and just buy the best instead of being a penny pinching miserly second class hiker <g> Remember, I said "maybe". Don't quote me</g></g>

I bet Lewis and Clark would have jumped all over each other to get any of the "second class" stuff we have today. It may just be a fixed point of reference that leads us to believe that just because there's more expensive and quite possibly better gear out there that the lesser of cost gear is not adaquate.

I'll quote you. :)

Check out this Cabela's coat. Seems to be a lighter down coat more akin to what you want:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?type=product&id=0044635920056a&cmCat=netcon&cm_ven=netcon&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=cabelas%20down%20coat&cm_ite=netcon

Not sure of the weight, however.

BTW, I wouldn't call the Lands End or Bean coat "2nd class"..it's just meant for a different type of activity: Stationary in very cold weather...winter camping in other words.

I think you are looking for something for shoulder season activities or quick breaks in cold weather?

</G>

Winter camping and everyday wear is what I had this in mind for. For every day wear, I like the durability factor. I want it to be able to be an outer jacket and not worry. I've held the WM flash jacket and it's scary light. The lands end jacket seems more like a cheap version of a jacket like the MB permafrost or WM vapor jacket at just a small weight penalty along with the compromises in warmth, fill power, etc. I don't use compromise as a dirty word, it's a tool for making decisions. When you choose between cheap light and durable, it's all a value judgement. This seems to me like a pretty good value.

I'd like the jacket for times where now I'd take a field jacket liner *and* my lands end cheap down vest. This would save me half a lb. over that setup and keep me warmer. In the long evenings of the winter, when sitting around camp around freezing or below I need a thicker poofy layer than just the field jacket liner. For short breaks I just use my shell & baselayer. If I get cold in that, I'm not in danger of sweating.

I've asked for a lands end gift certificate for christmas. I'm going to snag this as soon as it hits 60$. I'll let you know how I like it!

Just got my Land's End Snowpack 700 in the mail! I'm taking it out on ShelterLeopard's shakedown hike next weekend, so I will report back. On first inspection, it looks pretty good. Kind of a PITA to stuff into the pocket, but maybe it'll be easier w/ practice.

timebreaks,
Oh Goody!!
A real eyeball report. How big is the "stuffed in the pocket" size.
Got a camera?? A picture of it stuffed and one of you modeling would be great!!!

TIA

Mags,
The problem is, I don't "know" what I want. I only know what I don't want after I buy it and test it. I've never heard the term "shoulder season" before, but it's self explanatory.

I noted before that *Lots of hikers* with much more experience than I wear one of the mont bell inner parkas (apparently there is a synthetic version that looks just the same)

I know, from experience, that in addition to weight, cube is important on the trail. That pack fills up fast.

Last spring, I got through a few unexpected under 20 degrees F nights with my current gear and it wasn't too bad.The old hands were loafing around in their mont bells and looked cozy. The full dream is to have the down pants too. But that will have to wait for a year or two.

I use a Thermawrap by Montbell in those late/early season hikes. (Synthethic version of the down inner liner basically). They are quite nice. I also use it for winter during quick breaks.

As for the pants, if you are on budget, and don't mind something fugly, try the army liner pants:
http://www.rddusa.com/U-S-G-I-M-65-Pants-Liner-Military-Army-Liners-Army-Clothing-Military-Surplus-Military-Gear-Camouflage-Clothing-Army-Navy-Surplus-Vintage-Urban-Wear-Out-Wear-Us-Gi.html

They do wear as "highwaters" because they are meant to be worn with combat boots..but otherwise they are great.

I use them for camping trips and social backpacks (when I am out of my bag a bit more).

The size of the zipper makes stuffing it in there a little fussy. I wish that it was longer and the opening was bigger. Also, there is an extra layer of pocket that serves as the stuff sack, but there seems to be a lot of extra fabric in it. I haven't been able to get the jacket to fill out the stuff sack completely. A minor quibble, I suppose, but it's just not as neat a package as, say, my Campmor rain shell, which also stuffs into its own pocket.

I will post pics of it in use after the trip! Also, I will try to get to the post office to weigh it, since I don't have a scale of my own.

Also, does anyone know how to change the size of pictures to embed them in a post and not have them take over the whole screen? My website's image editor doesn't want to resize them.

I went and looked at the cabella's light weight down jacket that Mags linked and, from the spec point of view, it is exactly what I want, (If I can't/won't buy montbell).

But (always a but!!!) the only colors currently available are chestnut and Wintergreen. AAARG!!
In the dream, I'm striding down (up??) the trail in graphite/ black, the color all those veteran hikers in Franklin wore.

I am a vain SOB aren't I??

I have a couple of down jackets that stuff into their own pockets. I tend to not use that feature for a couple of reasons:

1. It's a PITA.
2. It creates a small hard lump that can be difficult to pack.
3. I don't like to stuff my down that much.

I find it's a lot easier to slide my down jacket inside my pack flat against the front of the pack. It doesn't take up any room that way, and it's easily accessible for breaks in cold weather.

I use a Montbell Thermawrap for 3, sometimes "3+" season use too, and I love it. Starting on the AT in late Feb this coming year I was convinced to start out with something beefier so I just got a Montbell Alpine Light Parka.

My particular point which may be somehow relevant to this thread (apologies if not ...) is that I was surprised at how low a weight hit I may take in making this switch. My size medium thermawrap jacket weighs 9.9 oz (281g) without stuff sack, and my new size large alpine light parka weighs 15.6 oz (441g), including stuff sack. Since the parka includes a hood, I'm toying with the idea of leaving one of two hat layers home, which saves 2.7 oz; if that's the case then I get a much beefier (albeit down rather than synthetic) jacket at a weight delta of about 3 oz. Since I never walk in the Thermawrap jacket anyway (too warm), the only downside is the possibility of the down parka getting wet. I think I can just be reasonably careful about that for the first few weeks ...

I found that the jacket was plenty warm for the weekend. Some down plumes were working themselves out around the stitching, but I was told that it was not an abnormal amount, and that some loss of the feathers is par for the course with down (this is the first down piece I've owned). I was wearing out around camp in a little bit of drizzle/drip from the trees, and the DWR coating repelled the water well for a while. I did end up putting my rain shell over it after a while, and the SnowPack layered nicely. ShelterLeopard borrowed my jacket during lunch, since her Patagonia down sweater was packed deep in her pack - and was annoyed that my jacket was basically the same as hers (even the color!) and less than half the price. All in all, I think that it's a worthwhile purchase. My camera died on this weekend's trip. :( ERNMAN has some pics of me and ShelterLeopard in our "matching" jackets, so I'll post them once I get them.

No one is allowed to claim "old age" until they're at least 85. I know, because when hiking, I've been outstripped by 75 year olds plenty of times. (Even in the summer, when I was in slightly better shape)

Got mine today and it sure is toasty. It's way warmer than my field jacket liner, easily as warm as a 300wt sherpa fleece and more wind resistant. I think it may even be warmer than my aran isles fisherman's sweater which is about 4 lbs of wool. The men's model is definitely big around the middle, and that's counting that I'm big around the middle too. I'm 6'2" and 225. I almost always take an XL. I ordered an XL, but I think I could have gotten the large and still worn a sweater underneath.

I'll try it out for temperature tonight, it's down near freezing.

Sat out on my front porch last night till about 11 in a merino base layer, the snowpack jacket and a shell. Just sitting there I was warm @ 30* for a couple hours as I watched the night and listened to the radio. I'm happy with the jacket's performance, though I'm sure that the tropical sounds of Radio Havana provided some psychological warmth.:sun

I also got mine last week during a sale for $60. It weighs 15 oz(XL). I wore it last night as I camped in the Hoosier National Forest. It kept me quite warm. The temperature got down to 18. I wore a Patagonia merino wool shirt as a base layer. As someone else said it is roomy.

It looks like you're right!!

When I got mine I got 25 % off the current price plus free shipping.

One thing that could be causing this. The special terms came off an email I got from them because I signed up for notification of sales. Maybe it's tied to that. When I clicked on the site the first screen I saw was "Your special offer is activated" or similar wording.

Second possibility is I just got lucky. In my case, in early November, the price was lowered from 99.50 and I got 25% off of that. Maybe they screwed up??

I'd call them myself, I state what I want and that someone else got that deal at the start of the sale.
Hope you get lucky too

Lands End Says:

TEMPERATURE RATING: -10° to 15° Fahrenheit. Use this as a comfort range for the type of climate you'll be wearing this SnowPack Jacket in while wearing a typical winter wardrobe.
I had the jacket on while going out briefly at 18F this morning.

I was feeling the chill of the morning just taking out the newspapers.

The -10F to 15F rating seems perhaps on the optimistic side. With another layer on, I could have easily handled the 15F with just a walking pace and a light load to carry. The -10 capability might be there if I were snowshoeing or Xcountry skiing. Certainly 0F for those more strenuous activities.

Anybody else have cold/warm experiences to share? I may don the Montbell light parka just for comparison.

Oh, the Montbell Light parka was much warmer. Tighter fit, but much warmer.

Just got two of them in the mail. I MED for my self and a MED for the GF.

mens med 14 oz
womens med 12 oz

This definitely fits much larger then any MED I have from mountain hardware. you can very easily layer under it. But with a base layer and this jacket on under a tight fitting gortex shell I feel much less restricted then with a fleece. It also has long arms I think i might have been able to get away with a small. I think its not cut for athletic people. I think the 'average American w/ beer guy could easily layer under this thing. I don't consider these good or bad just the way its cut.

DIY modification. With in minutes of opening the box i tried stuffing it in to its pocket. its goes in but its real tight but it was in a ball in the loose fitting pocket. The liner inside the jacket was restricting it. This problem is much more exaggerated on the womens jacket. well I cut a slit in the liner along where the zipper is. This allowed me to stuff the pocket much easier. It now fills out the whole pocket and doesn't seam over compressed. It now also looks like a NICE pillow. I do have before and after pictures if anyone is interested. also comparison pictures of how the jacket stuffs in to its pockets before and after.

OK the first 3 pics show one jacket stuffed after mod next to a stuffed jacket where the jacket can not fill the stuff sack due to the restricting liner. After the mod the pocket is not a whole lot larger but I don't feel like I am over compressing the down and it makes a nice pillow. after the mod there is alot more surface area once you turn it on its side. it even looks like a small pillow. I know you cant see the other corner of the blue jacket in these pics....

The next two pics are to show the small slit i made in the liner.
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/1/9/7/3/3/dsc07311.jpg

I realized this was hard to see in pics so i put paper in the slit that i cut in the liner and a beeny to see how big the slit is.

a PM. I got 2 for Christmas, both are the blue in size L, going to return 1 obviously. I don't have enough posts to list them on the gear for sale but I would rather send it to someone here who has a need as return it. I am pleased with this item: I am about 6',210 lbs and it's a perfect fit, even in the shoulders which is what will typically force me to an XL. Enough room to have a light layer underneath. Will ship back tomorrow if no one is interested. Mods - sorry if this post is offensive to the spirit of this board, if so can you delete this post?

I got this jacket as a gift in size Medium/Blue for X-mas, and could not be more satisfied with my decision to ask for this over a similar, more expensive option.

I considered many of the similar options of lightweight down jackets before going with this one, including jackets made by LLBean, Marmot, Patagonia, Montbell, Eddie Bauer (First Ascent), among others. I read reviews online, and checked a bunch of them out in stores. In my opinion, they were ALL nice jackets, and every one of them would probably work fine as a lightweight, packable insulation layer. The only big distinguishing factor between brands that I could find was color choices: some offer more, while Lands End offers only a few (Black and Blue in mens at the time of ordering).

Comparing cost, the Lands End jacket can be obtained for $50 on sale, or for full price closer to $100. The other jackets start at ~$120 on sale, and go up to $200 for the pricier ones. In my opinion, the extra money spent on the other brands would net you very little (if any) return.

Thoughts about using the jacket:

- Construction quality appears to be good. The jacket has small elastic cuffs that work well with gloves, the zipper was easy to operate and has a wind guard behind it. The inside of the collar has a fleece type lining (grey on my blue jacket). The front panels of the jacket are "lined" with an extra layer of material, while the back panel is not.

- The fit for a size M is good for me at 6' 170lbs. The sleeves are plenty long enough to not feel restrictive when worn over a base layer and long sleeve thermal shirt. I have not noticed the stomach fit being too loose as others have mentioned, but then again, if the jacket was sized much slimmer I think they would run the risk of it being restrictive enough to compress the down in places on the majority of people - so I think they hit the sizing right on.

- I have worn the jacket outside in weather in the 20's for 4 days going to and from work. It has been quite windy the last few days, and the jacket has been better than I expected of cutting the wind, although this is not what it is really intended to do. The jacket did see some rain on X-mas, and did not appear to let any rain soak in during my back and forth from the house to the car.

- When paired with a size M Marmot Ion Windshirt, you have a very solid winter insulation/wind layer combination. The M Marmot windshirt is a bit snug over the down jacket, but not enough for me to want to move up to the size L.

These all just initial impressions, only having had the jacket for 4 days now, but IMO, you would have a hard time justifying the extra cost of any of the other brands of down jacket to me since I think the Lands End jacket is just as good as any of them.

Saturday morning I took my kid to his riding lesson. It was around 30 degrees and the wind was blowing pretty stiff at the stables. I wore gloves, thermal underwear, jeans, a wicking T shirt, a knit cap, a very thin balaclava and my lands end down jacket. I was snug as a bug in a rug. it did a fair job of cutting the wind and was very warm.

mine came in yesterday. i really like it. it's very lightweight. i don't have a way to weigh it though. it doesn't pack super great into it's pocket but i could probably modify it to make it fit if i felt like it. the sleeves are a little wide at the wrists, but that could probably easily be altered too (although i don't plan to). i've tried on several other down sweaters/jackets like this but since i was given actual hips and am not shaped like a stick person, none of them fit well. i'm not overweight or short or anything...but none of them fit until this one. yay!
