First let me welcome myself to the forum, and give a little background info. I live in Eastern NC and have been thinking about getting back into hiking and camping. So I am planing a 5 day hike. I am not so concerned with Gear or Food but location. I figured this would be the best place to look for advice on a trail for this type of hike in Western NC. I would like to do this hike in November. I need to set up a place to park at the beginning of the hike and a place to meet a friend at the end. Thanks

look around Standing Indian. Lot of good loop options. I'm planning a 7 day from Deep Gap to Fontana. You could do 4 day from Deep Gap to NOC. Lots of good options in that area.

A loop might be best. Where can I find maps of Standing indian trails. Are there any 4-5 day loops? Thanks again

Pick up a copy of Exploring the Appalachian Trail. by Doris Gove. Ga NC Tenn. This can help you plan a loop hike in that area. You can park outside of the Standing Indian Campground. There is a loop hike there that takes you past three shelters and over Albert Mtn. Makes for a good 3 or 4 day hike.

I did the Art Loeb Trail in Pisgah a few weeks ago. Great time!

I only recently moved closer to the Southern mountains and am also looking for backpacking opportunities apart from the AT in NC and TN. Yesterday I picked up the NG map of the Pisgah Ranger District in Pisgah National Forest. It looks like there's some great hiking in Shining Rock and surrounding areas focusing on the Art Loeb Trail. I suggest you visit the "Other Trails" forums here on WB where you'll find some threads on hikes there.

But don't rely on the Pisgah NF website - it's virtually worthless.

Generally the closer you are to where you're hiking, the more likely local outfitters will carry the maps. My local outfitter here in Lexington carries all the National Geographic Southern Appalachian maps.

To go to the source, try this: http://www.natgeomaps.com/ti_784

I think that's the right map but it might behove you to also procure Map No. 785. (http://www.natgeomaps.com/ti_785)

Happy hiking!

Go to the search button, type in standing indian loop, you'll get a lot of good info. I know, I started a thread there and folks were extremely helpful! :)

The Forest Service sells a trail map of "Southern Nantahala Wilderness and Standing Indian Basin" for $6. Copy and paste this address into your browser to get ordering information:

I used an earlier version of that map to plan great loop trip there several years ago. You can also find a short write up about Standing Indian here:
