Tonight my wife said to me, "We should take a week every Spring and Fall for you to hike the AT. Starting in Maine, how long would it take you to finish?"

She doesn't hike and barely camps, but she's there for me when I want to.

12-16 years considering you would never have trail legs.

Mine does not hike either but is on board to "shadow" me in an RV for a thru when I retire. I figure I would be able to sleep in my own bed at least once a week and she could explore the country as we move up.

Okay to "say" it...but will she agree with you doing it year after year? :) It can be tough on spouses. Mine has to deal with section fever twice a year right now. But he knows its important to me and is there for me. And I want him out there to...and hopefully he can for an extended time in 2011.

Do some simple math. How far can you hike in a week (say nine days including two weekends) with two days of average travel time? Assuming you stay in average condition, can you hike 150 miles a week? Probably not. Probably more like 100, especially with the wonderful distraction of meeting a spouse at as many trailheads as possible. So it will probably take more like 20 to 25 years.

I met lots of section hikers on the 25 year plan, and some were in their seventies. My friend Saunter just finished the PCT after 34 years of section hikes.

While hiking the AT in 2000 I met two guys who were doing the trail a section every year. Most years they hiked for 10 days and once in awhile did a 2 week hike. They were doing this for 18 years and still had some to go. They would spend much of the year in preperation. Planing maildrops, shuttles etc.
For many, once the AT bug bites you, you may never recover.:)

Oh, we did the math and both realize that this is a years-long project. We've also discussed a trip out to do the Tahoe Rim Trail. Reno and Tahoe are both close enough (with casino access LOL) for her to have something to do while I walk a while.

She has no problem with the travel and sightseeing, she loves it. Me, I'm a homebody except for the hiking bug.

You don't have to hike the whole AT to be an Appalachian Trail Enthusiast.

Sounds like your wife has good ideas.
