What is the best way to get to Springer Mt AT intersection of USFS 42 from Dahlonega with a VW Passat sedan?

I'm guessing... Go Rt 60 past airport to Cooper Gap Rd, then USFS 42 to Hightower Gap, continue USFS 42 to Springer Mt intersection with AT? Are there markers along the way I should look for?

(I understand a shorter way, Rt 52 to Nimblewood Church Rd to USFS 28/77 to USFS 42 is NOT the way since it requires a high 4-wheel drive vehicle? Is that correct? )

Appreciate any help. Thanks.

two years ago in March I drove the Nimblewill route in a 95 GEO Metro. It was dry. There were bumps , but no major pitfalls then. And I drove it at night (1 or 2 AM)

I had a GPS to guide me though. There are one or two turns that would be tricky without.

There is supposed to be a easier route from over by Suches. It was just described in this forum. Try search

I drive an Acura Integra the following route on a regular basis, the route you are talking about that is. IMO it is the fastest way out of downtown Dahlonega. I've been every imaginable way as well. I've never seen any of the routes what I would call "impassable" in a car, but I have seen the route up Nimblewill have some places you'd need to get a "run" at them to make it without loosing traction in a car. There are houses to within a mile or so of the FS42 intersection on Cooper Gap Road and the military uses it a lot. So it gets kept up pretty well.

I took 42 from outside of Elijay and out to GA 60. The only road I had trouble with was trying to drive down to Three Forks, which after a half mile I turned around because it was so rutted. But 42 is fairly driveable as long as you are not speeding like crazy around the curves.

I beat the hell out of my Honda Civic a few years ago taking the back roads from Neels to Springer......BAD idea.

Taking 42 the short distance from the west to Springer is no big deal.
