Is there interest in having a geography maps forum? People could discuss how to generate maps, how good are certain GPSs, how good particular mapping software is, and upload maps or waypoints they have on file. The preliminary idea is to have two forums, one strictly for maps and one as a discussion area.

Yeah, I'm a total map dork. I think that has potential to be a solid forum.
KML for google earth is nice too.

Absolutely! Geography is my passion, and a dedicated discussion area/ map exchange would be great!

I'm following in your footsteps right now Kerosene, except one as a major and one as a minor. I'm leaning towards Comp Sci as the major. U of South Carolina has a great GIS program in both fields.
Can't get enough of maps. I stare at them all day at work. I get paid to make site plans. I do some surveying too. I use AutoCAD Land Desktop and AutoCAD Map for most of my stuff.
I vote Me and Mr. Parkay be moderators. Nobody does more with mapping than us.

Have a general stickey/post on how to use a Compass as well. I think that alot of people carry one and dont know how to use it.

I love my maps. I'm always looking them over to plan different outings. I love to get old maps and compare them to new ones.
Maybe it would be good to have sticky links to the best answers to some of the recurring map and geodata questions in such a forum - perhaps topics that don't qualify as "released articles" but come close.
I wonder if a distinction is worth making between those focused on paper maps and compass (maybe GPS), and computer map "stuff" ? I guess start out at least with all of those combined and decide later based on the threads if there's a clear fracture line between those.
