If money were of no object, what backpacking gear would you own? This may not apply to some of you guys who are exceptionally wealthy.:)

Not much different. Excellent gear really is not that expensive. The price of a mediocre used car would buy a full set of top notch stuff.

Not much different. Excellent gear really is not that expensive. The price of a mediocre used car would buy a full set of top notch stuff.
The bad things is, that is all some of us have.
I'd probably have Warbonnet make me a Cuben Fiber Blackbird Hammock and Tarp, ULA a Cuben Fiber Backpack, 900-fill Peapod,(Titanium Lekis with Diamond, Moissannite or other Hard Substance Tips,

Same **** I do now. My gear is dialed in just like I want it finally. I could use a new pair of boots/shoes though.

I would have custom made a large size toe nail clipper with a fold out nail file, a fold out knife blade that's partly seraded and part straight, and fold out can opener/bottle opener. And of course it would be made out of noweightium.

Back in 1980 when I was dirt poor I somehow managed to scrape up about $300 for a new top of the line North Face Ibex 550fill down bag and it became my ticket out to the four-seasons of the NC mountains. Not paying rent in those days really helped to put whatever money I had into just what I needed: Pack/Tent/Bag/Boots, etc.
Nowadays people including myself buy up a lot of stuff for the different seasons, a summer bag, a winter bag, a 3 season tent, a four season tent, but when you're dirt poor you will buy one pack, one bag, one pad; and these will have to work all year long. Especially if you're actually living out of your pack and can limited storage options.

I can buy pretty much what I need now. Backpacking is cheap compared to many other hobbies.
If I could have anything, I think I would get Western Mountaineering's negative 40 degree sleeping bag. "The Bison" costs almost $900.00 but it would be oh so ever warm. Then I could live outside all winter long...maybe even in a tipi(!).
20 gallons of salt water, and a bag full of leaves.

First, an enLIGHTened equipment Ephiphany XP.
Next, a 900-fill custom made JRB Stealth quilt-poncho with brushed face nylon interior fabric.
For canoeing and kayaking, I would like to try out hammock camping.
Maybe a Hennessy Backpacker Ultra-light A-sym or the Grand Trunk Nano 7 or the Ultalight Travel Hammock for the JRB Mt Washington 3 Convertible underquilt system that looks so great.
There are often trees, and no beach or campsites. I think hammock hanging would be ideal for a stopover on a rocky island with no beach.
Oooh, I could purchase a NeoAir right now, two: a small and a medium.
Woah, I could get the great stuff I find and try it out.
As it is, I know the features that work. It is better to feel the fabric. For example, who wants rough fabric in the first layer? Not me.
I have a website about this stuff.
It would be so nice to be able to purchase so many items that appear in the marketplace, I would like to try out and report on.
I would buy food, so much backpacking food. I would put together food boxes ready in advance for any backpacking trip.
If I could pay off my student loans I would be able to hike for the price of food.
Like some of the others, I'm pretty much dialed in. I think I would get a Warbonnet Blackbird & change my syn Overquilt to a down one, but other than that, I would just spend the money on hiking:
AT NOBO then SOBO, PCT, CDT, Hadrians wall (Scotland/England), West highland way (Scotland), etc.

My wife presents me with an annual statement of all hiking expenditures. It's an eye opener for sure. But, there are many other much more expensive hobbies
I pretty much have all the gear that I'd want, but I do have some mistakes in the gear closet, like a Gregory Baltoro.
I carried a 12.0 lb pack including food & water on my last trip.
