Apparently this was just a tragic accident (http://www.eagletribune.com/punewsnh/local_story_327003106.html?keyword=secondarystory) and the hiker was well prepared.

That's too bad.
It's a tough place to hike for sure, not matter how prepared or physically in shape you are.

Not too many details, just said it looks like a fall...I wonder if weather conditions had any part in the accident.

sad story.

i can see how it would be easy to take a backward fall when climbing the head wall, it steep w/ tricky footing & there's nothing there to break to your fall or get a hand hold.

Could be. The waether Saturday wasn't the best. It was gray and overcast, don't remeber if it had rained early on, just two days ago! Good chance there was a thin layer of ice on the rocks. That side of the mountian doesn't get much sun to speak of. Mosture from just clouds can form rime ice up there.
