My wife and I are - both from Florida at about 8 feet above sea level - are visiting my brother in Boone for our Thanksgiving break. Was lucky enough to get away for our first hike ever on the AT. Granted it was five miles from Carver's Gap north over several balds, but it was absolutely gorgeous. As a first taste of the AT it sure was incredible!!! Along the way we came across a mail box from a group working to "save the balds". All in all a great day!

Now that you have experienced the trail, you think you will be back?

There's something really cool about stepping out on the AT for the first time and seeing a white blaze. Something deep stirs inside of you and you know without a doubt that you have been infected with hiking fever. There apparently is no cure, just have to keep going back to the trail for a fix. I know I do!

Yes, we are now infected and will definitely be plotting our next course on the AT. Yesterday we left Boone, N.C. and are now in Atlanta visiting other relatives. We're so infected that tomorrow we are driving 100 miles north to hike Blood Mountain so my step-son can see "what the big deal is"!
This Thanksgiving break will provide enough hking to sustain us in our classrooms for a good while!
Thanks for the great replies...

Blood Mt. is a pretty tough hike from the north. Have fun!

Carvers is a great place to have your first AT experience. I have done that section 4 times this year.

I concur - it'll give you a great taste of hiking uphill. Hope it's a dry day for you; I'd imagine the north side of Blood Mountain can be slippery when wet.

No cure.... even the places you have been 15 times because they are close to home never get old!

As long as you're with good people nothing gets old. And, if you aren't... go ahead on your own. Enjoy the peace of the trail without any fools around. (they are rare, but, thay are out there) But, nature does have a way of making it worth it, regardless. :^D

I agree. I loved the section between Roan and Kincora hostel. I only wish I was close enough to hit it 4 times a year.

8' above sea level? Why so high?

I'm about 5' above.........(and right down the road from you).

It's too true! Even after a crazily bad trip, rainy, sore, etc... I'm already planning the next one.

We live in the highest point in Palm Harbor that my wife now tells me is over 50 feet above sea level, as opposed to the 8 feet I said. Show you what I know!
