I'm looking for a mesh or mostly mesh three person tent. Weight is a factor but not the overriding factor. Any suggestions.

Big Agnes SL seedhouse 3 is a roomy 3 person tent weighing in at a good amount 5lb or so I think. It will fit two adults with extra room for gear. It has a "bathtub" floor and all mesh above that. 2 vestibules; nice size well.
My wife and I have used ours a lot and love it. Kinda pricey but we got ours nwt on ebay

REI Quarterdome T3 is great for 2; probably as big as any other 3 person tent.

10x10 or 10x12 flat tarp or one of the many large pyramid tarps with three ultralite bivies or bug bivies would probably be the lightest and most flexible shelter.

Got one, love it. All dark mesh body that disappears when you're lying in it at night. The quality is good and it is very competetive on spec to tents that cost 3 times as much.

We have the exact same tent and it's a decent size for two people. No idea how they figure three can fit in there. There is not really enough room for any gear in there with two folks. It is fairly light for it's size though. Ours kept us very dry in a torrential downpour in October.

REI has some nice tents, so does Campmor. Not sure what your usage for the 3 person tent will be but I have used a large tent many times as a "base camp". I have a second-hand 4 person tent that I will set up as a base camp, say a National Park campsite, when sites are reserved and fcfs sites are hard to come by. Also, park rules say a tent must be present. Rental car will serve as camp gear lockup. Have backpacked out for up to a week with regular gear/tent hoping the camp-tent and auto will be intact when I return. I can then hang around the camp/facilities and do another trip. A great cheap hiking vacation is to fly into Las Vegas stop at Sam's Club and load up on cooler, charcoal, etc and head first in a clockwise direction to Zion NP, then on to Bryce Canyon NP then around to the South Rim Grand Canyon NP then back to Vegas. Donate the cooler to whomever and you're back on a flight home. Vegas has cheap AYCE places and cheap rental cars and flights in/out are cheap, at least the best deals I've ever found. You can adjust your itinerary with all kinds of neat places to visit in the area. Just have a lot of time to fully enjoy the trip. I spent 2 1/2 months out there between college and grad school and could easily have stayed much longer.

My wife and I have the Sierra Designs Sirius 3. It's half netting, with a fly, and half single wall fabric.

Black Diamond Vista. Lots of room, and you can set up the rainfly in several different configurations for privacy, view. etc.

Quick question to original poster:

Are you talking about three guys? Three big guys? Three women? Two adults and a child? If so, how old is the child?

Reason I'm asking is that there are all sorts of tents marketed as "3 Person". Some of them would be snug if everyone was my size; then again there are some 2 Person tents on the market that could easily accomodate 2 adults and a small child. Every tent is different, and there's no "standard" sizing.

From the original poster,

Mostly the tent will be used for two people. We just wanted the extra space. When there are three people it will most likely be me, 5' 10' 170lbs, and two women or medium build. So, I think we will be OK.

Thoughts...

Also, I discounted the Rainbow 2 as I wanted a freestanding tent. From the description the Rainbow 2 did not appear to be free standing.

My campground and river tent for years has been a North face Rock 32. It is a great tent that has been buried in snow, stood still in 40+ mph winds and doesn't show any wear after being set up on sand a few dozen times. For $200 full retail it's worth looking at. I think it weighs around 5 1/2 lbs but divided by 3 thats not bad. Definitely try some other tents out at a store and roll out 3 sleeping bags in it to make sure it's actually big enough for you. Happy hunting

Again thanks for all your input. I eliminated the Rainbow 2 as it's not a free standing tent. I should have been clearer about this requirement up front.

For Jack, I'm 5' 10" my hiking partner is a 5' 2" woman. When we have a third it will most likely be a woman around the same height.

Know you already decided...but my wife and I used the Big Agnes Cooper Spur 3 on our thru and loved it. With all the rain this past year, we were dry and comfortable, no worries at all. It is a little expensive, but not bad considering it is your "home" for 6+ months.
