Actually those are just text caches of the PDF's of the Companion, readily availabe directly for the ALDHA.ORG site. I've just been downloading NC/TN in preparation for a Thanksgiving walk between Damascus and Erwin.

It is much easier to download the PDF, slam it into an OCR program and maintain formating with a little editing. I've even perserved the map of Erwin. I don't bother with the logos for hikers and services.

Wow. Does this mean it's free?

I buy the companion every year for reading material, like to support the ALDHA.

Yes, it has been free via pdf file for a while. But it is one of those things that if the data is usefull, you ought to buy the book because the ATC gets the profits. I too have used the free version to check out the data for a section I plan to hit to see how the services are and what they are, but I get the book to pay them back for the help.

Sounds good. I intended on buying the book, like the tangible aspect of it while 'studying', reading off the computer not my favorite.

Agree, definately want to support this org.:D

The Companion is published jointly by the Appalachian Trail Conference and ALDHA, the Appalachian Long-Distance Hiker's Association, the only national organization I know of that is devoted to long-distance hiking and backpacking.

In addition to publishing the Companion, ALDHA also sponsors a wonderful event each year called The Gathering which consists mainly of lectures, slideshows, and presentations, all dealing with long-distance hiking. I attended one of these events before my first long hike and it was a great time and a very useful weekend.

The Gathering is always held near a college campus; this year, it's in Pipestem, WV near the campus of Concord College in Athens, WV, which is not far off of I-81 near Pearisburg.

If anyone is iterested in this event, they should check out ALDHA's informative website at www.aldha.org. As it gets closer to October and Columbus Day weekend, there should be periodic updates on the Gathering, a listing of sceduled events and presentations, etc.

I hope to see lots of you there!

I have the 2004 and used it on my last section up in CT / MA this summer. It is heavy, so I tore out the pages needed, it was really helpful and had many interesting tidbits and asides that I would have otherwise missed.

Looking forward to the 2005 issue!
