I recall hiking north out of Lyme, NH and seeing along the trail, a stone mile marker with the #412 on it.

Anyone know what the story is on this marker?

Sure it's miles from each end of the trail, but why right there, and why not the usual wooden sign, and why..........................
Inquiring minds want to know!

No doubt someone with a spare hunk of granite figured it would be a fun thing to do. Wonder how many people and how long it took to lug it there?

We all know that it represents the distance to Katahdin. What we would like to know are the circumstances that brought it there. It probably weighs a couple of hundred pounds and it's some distance from a road. It probably cost a good piece of change to have it made.
That spot, Mi. 412, must mean an offle lot to someone for some reason. That is what we are trying to find out. Don't know how long it has existed, but it was there in 2001.:-?

Why not you got solar lights, hanging flower baskets and a well taken care of ground at one shelter. Which in a way was nice. Note I hear the lights are gone :(

As was said a sense of humor is nice. :)
