As I was out walking with my dog the other night I was looking out on the ridge where the trail runs and wondered how many other people get to look out on the trail every day?
Relatively few, I would guess. I'm in Texas myself.

No such luck. My wife loves the shore and I love the mountains, so we compromised and live in flat southeast Michigan.

So where is that point that you so technically mapped out?
About 1100' north of Surprise Lake in Abram S. Hewitt state forest in new jersey. A few miles Northbound of the Wawayanda Shelter., maybe half a mile from the NJ/NY State Line
Close enough at about 20 from most points on the AT in Berks County with many who live much closer reporting.

80 miles from my house to where the trail crosses the road Franciscan Way at the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, where I do my corridor monitoring work. That takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours when there's little or no traffic on the roads. When traffic is heavy, or the Throgs Neck Bridge is backed up the sky's the limit on time.

8 hours from the southern terminus, almost ten from the end of my last section. *sigh*
im about 2.5 hours from springer(i wish i was closer)...im on the trail at least once a month!:)

Love the fact that I live so close to the AT. It's a great resource to have practically in your backyard. I can be to close to 10 different trailheads in 25 minutes of less.

18 miles to Sams Gap, 30 minutes to Hot Springs, 45 minutes to Max Patch, 30 minutes to Standing Bear Farm, 30 minutes to Erwin. One of the many benefits to living in Asheville is that the AT is so close with so many different spots within an hour. Cue LW Asheville dirty hippie comments.:D

I can see Dragon's Tooth from my front window.:D
The trail is part of my front yard both at my house and my place of business...

We are from SE Virginia not far from the Great Dismal Swamp (not nice to hike!) and it takes us about 4.5 hours to get to the closest part of the AT as it runs thought VA. We are lucky though that we are about a days drive away from probably 90% of the trail except for the most Northern Areas like Maine and New Hampshire.
I do wish we lived closer...it would make our goal of section hiking all of it much easier to finish.
200 yards by steep bushwhack or 400 yards by our foot path from the back door.

160 miles mainly on VA I-64 west to Rockfish Gap (near Waynesboro).
25 hours by train and shuttle to Amicalola Falls State Park.

I am lucky enough to have about three valleys line up so that I can see Roan and Unaka Mountains...whilst sitting on my couch. No lie. Still more than 25 miles from several trailheads.

It's been 6 months since I moved to Lexington and I like my new home and community......but....
I'm farther from the Trail than ever before in my life - more than 200 miles (I think about 240). The closest point in terms of driving time is Davenport Gap.
This poll reminded me of a similar one - http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1055 - which I'll resurrect and update.
Less than ten miles on foot from my house to Damascus.
I can see the whole Holston ridge line, Whitetop and Mt Rogers from a hill close to my house.
Still, I have no vice presidential aspirations.

About 20 air miles from the bulk of the trail in Georgia. I see the peaks of Tray and Rocky Mtns every single morning on the way to work. I can make the drive to Tray Gap and be standing on the summit of Tray looking south towards my house in about 40 minutes total.

I'm gonna guess about a six mile walk out my front door 2 miles is public road then it's about 4 miles up a gated off state forest road. The hike up the hill on the state forest road is really quite pretty. I can and do hike to either Pine Groove Furnace or Caledonia State park in about a day. I hike some part of the AT at least once a month.
I can look out my window and see fullhardt knob the trail crosses my street

Auuuuuuuggggghhhhh! It kills me that you all live sooo close! I have to drive nearly four hours to hike now, and as I hike north, I'm hiking further away from where I live, so it takes me longer each time.
I can see the original A.T. route out my bedroom window, but since a 1955 relocation one can't claim to see it from Allen Mountain anymore.
(Used to live 3 blocks off the A.T. in Boiling Springs, a required daily trek due to no home mail delivery in the historic area)

Right now I am looking at a snow covered Iron Mountain. As the crow flies I am probably less than 3 miles from the trail.

I'm about 40 miles from where the AT crosses VA55 near Linden, VA.
13 hours. Doing five day section on the Superior this year and darn, it is far too.

I live on the western edge of California so I'm about as far away as you can get. But I'm only 60 miles from the PCT. 100 if you want to walk on trails to get there.
Maybe something like 80 miles from Katahdin. About 12 miles from the IAT, though.

Not only living 25 to 100 miles from the trail now, but have spent my entire 50 years (in three different states) living 25 to 100 miles from the trail.
5 miles from Pisgah Nat. Forest, within 30 min. of 3 state parks, 30 min. from the Foothills trail, and within 1 1/2 to 3 hrs from the first 500 miles of the AT. LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!!!

I voted living on the trail even though I'm not really living on the trail. But I can lean over my porch, throw a rock, and hit thru-hikers on the head. And let me tell ya, once you've done that once, it's pretty hard to stop.

On my Long Trail end-to-end hike in '07 (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=205041), I met a couple from Fort Worth who were sporting broad smiles, sunny dispositions, and obviously relished the experience. When I asked where they were from, they replied how happy they were to hike in the cool green woods of New England instead of sitting in 100 degree temps in Texas.
And it wasn't even that cool a day by Northestern mountain standards but I guess much cooler than the DFW Metroplex.

Four hours from the AT and about 4 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean (depending on light signals). Yet I've been on the AT more than I've been on the beach! :D

It has been a while since I thought about measuring anything in smoots, but I walked that bridge for four years myself, long ago.
Was screwing around with my son a year or so ago talking about millgores, Killgores and farthnocks. I told him that these were all metric units of time. By the end of all this he wanted to jump from the back seat and slap me and his sister who went along with all of it.

On the other hand, I'm about 40 miles from the West Highland Way and the Southern Upland Way in Scotland, and maybe 60 miles from the Penine Way in England.
