Springbreak in TN, hiking with Stitch and Ragamuffin was a great mix from cold and wet, to beautiful... April in VA with Old Man River, meeting Ranger, Spokes, Cascade, and lots of others. Rain, rain, rain... McAfee Knob, Pearisburg, Daleville... But like Jeff said, the people are the best part!

Hiking above treeline in New Hampshire in the middle of June .
Bagging a couple Presidents, Jefferson and Madison along the way.

Also section hiking in May during the week of rain and no :sun I meet numerous thru hikers and sectioners like myself and that in itself was worthwhile since all the views looked the same anyway.

My blue-blaze summer tour rocked. Overmountain Victory Trail, Laurel Falls and the Hampton blue blaze, the Virginia Creeper Trail (by bicycle), Grayson Highlands and both the Tennessee and Virginia portions of the Iron Mountain Trail. Just a fantastic trip over 10 days time.

When I finish section hiking the entire Alabama portion of the Pinhoti Trail in three weeks, that will make for a close second.

Hiking the Presidential Range on a 135 mile visibility day - August 27, 09. Wow!!!! That would be a notable "where" and "when" example.

I could add countless ""who" examples as well. The many friends we made on the trail enriched our experience deeply.

Spending a day in Franklin with "The BUS driver" listening to historical stories, eating the best Mex food on the trail, moving soda machines and learning the virtues of drinking Calvert's Whiskey. What was the name of that whiskey? Sang along with the Chunky Gal and was the first to stay at the new hostel. Pretty righteous day.

Doing a solo in New York a few months ago, and meeting a bear (eyes only) near the food box in the middle of the night the last time out in New Jersey.
Hiking solo is simple and peaceful, but sharing a camp area with others is often the highlight of any trip.
Oh, and my son David (24) came along on the NJ hike but had to bail early because of blisters (doesn't listen to dad and uses old boots).
He's become a wonderful human being. I just found out that a well to do (comfortable) friend who has just returned to our church is going to help him out with college tuition. The Lord works in many ways through many people :).

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Sasquatch 2014 and River1 for shuttle service and advice this past summer and fall.
Happy Holidays, all!

Hiking the Georgia section of the AT in June with my 16 year old son. At one point hiking up Blood Mountain, he asked me why I always slowed down going uphill...

Oh, to be 16 again.

Ron, I hope to meet you someday, thanks for all that you do for the AT and its hikers. As for my best 2009 memory, I would say hiking from Bennington, VT to Manchester Center, VT. Great times.

After a few days on the trail for a section south out of Hanover coming into the Long Trail Inn and meeting up with a Friend Baltimore Andy and hanging out late into the night listing to Leon Nobo 09 Prairie Dog Nobo 09 and Barred Owl Lt 09 jamming at the piano. More were out listing to them than the band in the bar. I had the song Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show stuck in my head for the next 3 days. Awesome guys thanks a ton.

My best of '09 was being support for my daughter (Lupine) and her "significant other" (Blacktoe) on their thru hike. On June 3rd we climbed Katahdin together, the 4th was one of my hardest days watching them walk out of Katahdin Stream campground heading south. The very best: was when I sat waiting for them on Standing Indian Mt. in fresh snow. I hadn't seen them since PA. I got only better when I joined them and hiked 2 1/2 days from Neels Gap to Springer ( including the approach trail). They completed their hike on Oct. 22nd.

Ron, I believe you picked them up and when they stayed in Franklin. Thank you for that.

chatting with rebecca at the lakeshore pub.
watching the wind turbines on the lakes of the clouds hut NOT turn. they were totally still the day we climbed mt. washington.
jumping off the james river bridge.
hoolahooping the night away at the trail days' drum circles.
the physical act of climbing katahdin. that was a FUN 5 miles!!
i could go on...and on...and on...

Foremost: getting back to the trail after a 25 year hiatus. I was able to get out three weekends backpacking with my son, and hike most of the CT section, from Hoyt Rd, NY to Lion's Head/Bear Mtn.

The two rattlesnakes I saw on the trail in June are a close second. ;)

Seeing 7 bears in SNP weekender (blackberry season) and near 360 deg views atop Black Rock mtn.

Eating ripe jonathan apples right off the tree on a bald area near Low Gap.

Enduring rocks, missed rides, thunderstorms and yellowjacket stings to get to a cold brew at The Doyle.
