OK... I know what dog fanciers would say....but is it impractical to bring my dog on the trail? I mean he is a well trained working dog that can carry his own food and gear? drawbacks?

Yup. Not practical. You won't be welcome at most hostels, motels, or shelters. NH and Maine are really tough on a dog. If you do take a dog, you carry his food and water. Most dogs don't complete a thru-hike that start. Neither do humans for that matter.

Drawback: Nobody wants the dog there but you. Simple as that.

Dogs on the trail are a hot button issue. Read past threads on this topic.

Jackie, good post. Nice way to put it.

And after a couple of 20 mile days in the rain the dog might not want to be there either.

Ever sleep in a tent with a dog? The smell of wet hair and bad breath, farting, snoring, growling for no reason, muddy feet, getting up at all hours of the night to go outside and pee, it's just not comfortable.

It bothered my dog so much she started sleeping outside.

My dog agrees.
