There is so much stuff (gear) to go hiking with, how does a newbee figure out what to bring and what not to. What does the experienced bring?

There is so much stuff (gear) to go hiking with, how does a newbee figure out what to bring and what not to. What does the experienced bring?Go out on a couple of weekend backpacks. You needn't climb mountains or even get far from the road. Just go out and live with the the gear you brought. You'll soon realize what you are not using and what yoku wished you'd brought along.
