View Full Version : How to pack the Caldera Cone?

I love the Caldera Cone for my SnowPeak 700. I pack everything inside my pack and I do not wish to carry the Caldera Caddy. I'm thinking about wrapping the Cone around the outside of my sleeping bag, but I'm worried that the Cone may tear into some of my gear. What have you tried? What works?
I cut the top of a Gatorade bottle off and use it and my cookpot to store the stove in. It weighs 0.85oz and I also use it as a water scoop and measuring cup.

I made my own par the instructions I found on the hammockforums site and made it a bit wider than normal but shorter and switched to skurka's fancy feast stove and only left about a pinky's width above the stove. I pack it seperatly in it's on little silnylon tube that I made and just stick it in the side pocket of my pack. The last part nullifies the first but that's just how I do it. I can fit it inside a 1.1 liter tall pot though with just a pinch hanging out.
For $25 you could buy the UL Compact version sized to fit inside your pot (http://antigravitygear.com/proddetail.php?prod=TDCULC&cat=40).

I just wrapped it up really really tight- worked surprisingly well.

When you wrap it up tight are you sticking it next to your gear? Any problems with tearing your gear?

The compact cone looks interesting...but it would be hard for me to justify spending another $25 if I can figure out the larger cone.
The Gatorade bottle idea looks good. Thanks for the pictures! It makes my poor imagination easier to deal with :o.

i have the osprey exos pack and put it in the loose outside pocket. Its been four months and hasn't ripped it...maybe i'm getting lucky :/
I used a cone for a few trips and rolled it up in my sleeping pad. Worked really good.

I also do that, but then wrap it with a piece of manila file folder paper to cover the sharp edges and use a rubber band to keep it from unrolling. Takes up little space this way.
Mocs version makes the most sense to me as in that way you can use the space inside the cone with little chance of either damaging the cone or gear around it. I suspect that having the cone on the outside of the pack sooner or later will end up squashing it.
Because I only boil water I use the Caddy to re-hydrate my food and as my eating "bowl" , the lid as a mug. So my kit when stored looks like Mocs's.

260 trail miles and I'm still using the same Dixie cup they sent with my Caldera for an MSR Titan kettle. The dixie cup with the cone and all cooking incidentals (soap, lighter etc) gets stored inverted in the pot. My Ti mug goes on top of the Dixie cup. The whole shebang gets stored inside the smallest of the trio of poly dry bags from Wally world. The stove, along with my food bag, goes in the top of my ULA pack.
