So, I know the "rules" about shelter reservations and blah blah. I have hiked on the AT through the park twice from Fontana to Clingman's Dome. This time I'm taking 3 other people on an adventure all the way through the park. There is no way that during this time of year there are going to be 4 open spots in the shelters.

I know it's a question of morals to some, but I was thinking of just putting that we are thru hikers on the permits and taking a tent as needed. What do you all think? I would rather stay in the shelter, but again, don't see it as very realistic to get every shelter we need during the week with 4 people hiking.

Not hiking the AT is not an option because, well, quite frankly I don't want to hike another trail. LOL!

they can only be reserved a month in advance, so just call in the morning one month in advance.

someone's gotta get the reservations, why not you?

Whether you get reservations or not I would still carry a tent.
Last year at Icewater there were about 40 people there.

Tents are cooler anyways :)
