Good Luck to you and stay warm...
I might be out jan 1st...................
I'd LOVE to see your gear list, including clothing. (I think there's a thread for gear lists.) I'm contemplating being out there in early to mid-winter and I'm always wanting ideas for what to bring.

I have an odd hike plan. I am hiking in January.
I cannot get five months off from work so. I am trying to hike the whole thing in a year but only taking 3.5 months off from work.
November-January section hikes totalling 250 miles of AT
Feb15-May 1Springer mtn to New England
Sept1-October 10 Vermont to Katahdin.
Before I leave Springer I will have a huge chunk of Pennsylvania done, all of NJ, Ny, CT and Mass done. Totalling 250-350 miles.
The key is to get to Pennsylvania by May.
I will be hiking plenty in January, but all in the Northeast. So it will be much colder.

But we love the cold in the Northeast, don't we?
Look at the thru hike registry spread sheet, I know there are more Jan. starters than this. I think Petr from Mich is doing January, and there were a couple others...

Listed as Jan/Feb though, not just January.

I will work on posting the gear list. I started at Amicalola Falls on Jan 9, 2007; so, I know what I am getting into

Wow, hard to believe people are starting their thruhikes already :) makes it feel so much closer for me... good luck to all the early, and cold, starters!
Drifters Quest - you have that right! COLD! I spent a week in sub-freezing temps, not nearly as enjoyable as more resaonable weather. Plus - NO wildlife, plants growing, etc. Different experience. Shelters are always empty though. Could be a tough Winter this year!

I would be worried about everything even being passable at this point! I love the snow, but I too want to see more plants, wildlife, and worry less about storms coming in and bitterly cold weather. I imagine an early start would take quite abit longer

ah, but remember....look at all the frozen food possibilities you have. Personally Bertolli's meals beat them all
