Hello there,

My friend and I are planning on backpacking the John Muir Trail this summer in late June dependant on weather. We plan on dedicating 7 days to the trip. 1 day of prep/ getting permits and maps and 5 1/2-6 days of backpacking. Now that you know that, my question is:

*What is a good portion of the John Muir Trail with lots of water and greenery to backpack within a 5 1/2 day period (Trail head and trail end)?

Thanks for the help! :D

that's an easy one (water, green)

start in Tuolumne Meadows and hike from there to about Vermillion Resort or Muir Ranch. Logistics would be your biggest problem to get out from there.

Or, start in Yos Valley and finish at Reds Meadows, take the bus back. Problem in Yos Valley is to get a permit, so apply as soon as the reservation opens.

The southern half of the trail is much higher, with plenty of water, but definitely not "green" like the first half.

The first part out of Tuol tends to be the lesser traveled as well....

I'd say any of it is good.
Why not start at one of the ends so you can finish it next trip?
