I am doing a hike for charity and I want to be able to get gps so that my progress can be seen on my blog. Is there a way I can link my gps to my blog? If so, how? Thanks

You can use a Spot which reports back to a Google Map which can be embedded on a blog.

Will this help?

You can use a Spot to post Facebook via another service called Firefly.

I don't know if this is the best way but if you get your track data converted to .kml or .kmz file you could drop it into your blog and have it run through Google Earth. Google Maps allows you to store your own maps as well so you might be able to post your map file onto Google maps than use a link in your blog. I'm not familiar with blog software though to offer anything that is a one step sort of process.

If you're willing to change where your blog lives, www.postholer.com (http://www.postholer.com) already handles this for SPOT users. For other users too, however without SPOT you have to manually enter the coordinates.

For the geek inclined and tech savvy , you can make Postholer work "under-the-hood" of your website. To the outside world, your journal is still on your own personal site:

If you want to see how the Spot works, visit my web site and click on the "Spot" link. My wife and I are currently hiking in Arizona.

To see SPOT in action on the AT, view Elliott's journal and click on the AT Map link or the 'Last SPOT Location' link:

http://postholer.com/elliott

SPOT help page: http://postholer.com/journal/help.php?#spot

To see how manually entering a lat/lon into your daily journal entry works, see Powder Rivers AT journal:

http://postholer.com/jdavidse

If that doesn't suit you, you can use Twitter to tweet your lat/lon into your journal:

http://postholer.com/journal/help.php?#twitter

Like Mags suggests, you can embed your postholer journal into your own web site or embed your journal map into your blog:

http://postholer.com/gmap/embeddedMapExample.html

If you do the above, you must still keep a journal a postholer. Keeping a blank journal to use this feature is a big no-no.

The big plus about using the postholer google maps is you get a full trail trace, mileages and elevations. findmespot.com google maps only gives you a spot on the map.

I'll add that as someone that uses a smartphone to keep my journal on the trail, I switched to postholer.com as it just worked better for that --- and then various features were added that made it yet better for mobile access, to include nicely designed weather reports, the ability to add journal entries via email, and just generally being fairly fast and easy to view using limited bandwidth on a small screen device.

Thanks for the props postholer. I will add to the OP that it isn't necessary to carry a gps device to post your GPS location. I just carried a printout of gps coordinates for every shelter on the AT, and now some of the guidebooks have the coordinates for parking and road crossings. Postholer.com worked for me because I could type these in the email I sent out from my smartphone. If you don't stay at a shelter one night, then just type in the nearest one. You can tweak this with considerable precision by looking at the topo map zoomed in, and clicking where you camped. So practically speaking, you could do this quickly and easily whenever you encounter a computer, which is usually in every town.
