Hey, anyone have any suggestions on a lightweight backpacking toaster? I could toast my bread just in my frying pan, but I like my toast just right, ya' know? Anyway, I probably won't use it on my thru, really just weekend backpacking trips. Ideas?

Cut or find a stick, impale bread, hold over fire. Simple and basic.

primus makes one. Collapses together to be pocket size. Weight is maybe 6oz.

Thanks Digger- it looks good. And Hikes in Rain- I need the perfect toast. For a thru, I'm definitely using your method though.

Was kinda thinking of one like Elwood has in his apartment in the blues brothers, that made beautiful toast. But I think that if I heat my pot with nothing in it, it may seriously damage it. I know you can't heat aluminium without anything in it...

Mine is a GSI teflon coated aluminum, anyone know if I can make toast in it without it turning into tinfoil?

I like the smoky taste. And I do occasionally bake while out. Just wind stiff dough around a stick, hold over the fire until done. When it falls off the stick, though, it's called "ashcake". I tell the people watching that this is the correct way to make ashcake.

"Never give the thing a name until it'd done" -- Horace Kephart

Back to the pot...yeah, I'd think you could fry bread in it without issue. To be safe, I'd use gentle heat, though, if you can manage it. I've used the frying pan out of my old Boy Scout cook kit to do that.

See, I don't mean making bread, I just mean toasting already sliced bread, like pepperidge farm.

I'll be doing a little fry bread on my thru though- soo good. And the biscuit around the stick method. Though I make good biscuits in a twiggy fire- really nice.

But I don't want to burn the heck out of my pan, so I'll have to figure all that out.

I stick a fork in my bread or bagel and toast it over my stove. Easy peasy.

Look around and see if you can find any stainless steel mesh. It might be the lightest alternative after the sticks.

I don't carry bread often but I have just buttered or oiled up the bread and toasted it in my non stick frypan lid to my pot (when I am using the 2 Liter pot). Quite tasty that way.

Same here. It's like making a grilled cheese sandwich w/o the cheese. :)

And even better when one sprinkles sugar and cinnamon on the second side and it melts :D Ford, my son, loves that!

One of my current ideas is to turn a small piece of titanium sheet metal into a grill by drilling/slotting it extensively, then cutting it to fit just inside my BushBuddy (the grill will be supported by ti tent stakes run through holes drilled into the "superstructure").
Oughta make a dandy toaster, too, as the fire burns down....

What about regular window screening? I would think it has to be pretty cheap at any hardware store.

You might also consider a cheap cookie cooler rack that can be found for a few dollars. They are 10"X10" and can be cut with wire cutters to 5X10 sized light 2.5oz grill that can work for toast, steak or anything else. The idea was previously posted on WB by others. Good luck!

Well, if you're careful you might be able to use aluminum window screening. Obviously you would not want to use any plastic screening. The reason I didn't mention al. screening is that it may melt.

Warrgy's suggestion is a bit extream. I'd go with a two slice toaster, 1500 watt inverter and a motorcycle battery. Might be able to carry that a mile or two.

Toasting bread over a camp fire takes some practice and good timing not to end up with a lump of charcoal!

I have three brass toaster forks from more than a hundred years ago, the fourth was made by a great grandfather from wire to sit by the fire early in the morning for tea & toast. Suprise Coglan's copied it....

This one (http://www.rei.com/product/401036) is the same weight as the GSI toaster, but holds more toast. We used these to toast MRE bread when I was in the Marine Corps. Decent piece of gear. You can get it for half the listed price at Walmart.

Decent shot (http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/05/63/89/00/0005638900504_500X500.jpg)of the toast produced to get you hungry.

Once the toaster cools, you simply pull loose the wires and it packs down flat.

Yep... not only is it now winter, but as you know from being in the DC-area, it's been brutally cold and crazy windy the past 2 weeks. It is supposed to end next week and be in the 40s next weekend so I'm hoping to make it out for an overnighter then.
