Are there any NOLS instructors/students on the board? Can you please share your knowledge and experiences? I am considering participating in one of their programs, though myself am an accomplished backpacker. Thoughts?

this one guy who worked with them said it is a really good experience but a lot of the people there are rich children sent there to 'toughen up'

Thanks Wilconow. That's some good perspective.

Tweedy & Co. are coming to MD soon.

NOLS = lead you by the hand little child, in a group setting, won't let you hurt yourself fragile thing, follow the leader and stay in the pack. Overgrown wimpy anal-retentive Scouts.

When asked about doing the AT, they'll go on endlessly about the dangers and tell you only hikers with 10 to 15 years backpacking experience should attempt such an extreme feat. Told one guy that there is a high risk of his daughter being seriously injured or killed on the AT .

Any other *helpful* advice out there?
