Hello hiking friends,

First of all we would like to thank all of you that have contributed information to the AT Parking website (http://appalachianTrail.rohland.org (http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org/) sometimes referred to as http://rohland.homedns.org/at/at_menu.aspx). Because of you, this website has become a reliable source of information about access to the Appalachian Trail.

Over the years, we have received a lot of email requests for information about parking safety. Often we aren't able to provide current information to hikers. So once again we bit the bullet and changed our database to permit collection of parking safety information. Now we need YOUR help again. Would you please navigate to the link above and take a few minutes to rate the safety of AT parking areas that you have used recently or that are familiar to you. Many hikers will use the information that you supply when planning their section/day hikes. The more ratings/reviews for each parking area the more valuable this information becomes to other hikers. So please share your parking experiences with your fellow hikers.

Thank you so much,

The maintainers of the AT Parking Database,

Dave, David and Cyndi

Couldn't get it to open to allow input using a Mac. I'll see if I can get my wife to get it to work.

I can open it and view it but can not add any ratings on my XP PC.

I was able to do it. :)

First, you need to click on the tab that says "Rate Safety" by the description of the parking area. Then a dialogue box opens allowing you to rate the area and enter any comments. etc. Last, you have to enter your name and email.

Very Nice!! This can be a great tool. Thanks for putting this together... it's very extensive.

sasquatch2014 I would suggest that you check to see if you are permitting pop-ups for the parking site. I put a footnote to that effect on the Google map button but neglected to put one on the rating button. If that doesn't work, let me know.

peakbagger did you click on the rating button or the show all ratings button? To add a rating use the "rate safety" button to see comments that everyone has posted click on the "show all ratings" button. Please let me know via email if you continue to have problems.

I do see that we have had some Mac and PC users successfully enter some ratings. So I don't think there's any problem particular to a specific machine/operating system but I've been proven wrong before. Thank you all for your safety ratings. Please continue to share your experiences.

I will give it a shot but you don't have to be McGuyver to figure out if the lot is safe, Some lots have warning signs others have window glass mixed into the dirt.

This is great. Unfortunately, Wise Old Owl, I don't want to arrive at a parking area and find it is unsafe. I use this site to plan my section and day hikes. This information will be invaluable to folks like me when planning hikes. It will help me decide where to park and where to avoid. Thanks to the folks maintaining this web site.

Shouldn't the previous ratings already be on there? Like current rating with the Rate Safety button under it.

Entries work with my Mac OS X, version 10.4.11

Cabin Fever,

The "rate safety" button is always displayed but the "show all ratings" button is only displayed if someone has rated the parking area. If there have been multiple ratings, the rating displayed on the state/section page will show you the average of all of the ratings but the "show all ratings" will show you the individual submissions. So the more people that rate a particular parking area, the more valuable the rating becomes. Here's an example of where we have multiple ratings: http://rohland.homedns.org/at/state/state_detail/AT_state_detail.aspx?stateID=13%20&sectionID=124
