(In light of the Beer Thread)

What's your drink of choice on the trail? Or off it?

I was drinking Maker's Mark. Until I tried Knob Creek, it's great. It'd warm you up on a cold evening on the trail.

What do you enjoy?

I like Ancient Age, but recognize it's not all that great a whiskey. Not at all bad, though. I'd guess Makers Mark would blow it out of the water, but I haven't tried it.

I'm a somewhat educate beer judge, like good wines without having the education to say why, and looking forward to reading what others have to say about my favorite distilled beverage!

I have a bottle of The Glenlivet 12 year old and Johnnie Walker Black Label but I havn't really enjoyed either of them. Especially the single malt. I don't know if I just don't like scotch or if Glenlivet just isn't for me.

I spent several years living in Lexington, KY, not too far from teh heart of bourbon country. The best bourbon I ever had was Woodford Reserve. Damn fine, smooth bourbon.

A nurse I used to work with had a daughter who is a chef. Her signature dessert? Warm chocolate-bourbon bread pudding with a scoop of bourbon ice cream. Now that was some good stuff! :banana

If I can afford it I go for better Scotch and single malts are usually best. On The trail I usually carry something cheap and usually a scotch. I will go for any whiskey. Lately I have been taking Black Velvet. It already comes in a plastic bottle, cheap and good for the price. I am also a bit of a beer geek and have made my own beer, still make wine and my specialty is hard cider.

Bourbon is American whiskey made mostly from corn and is associated with, Bourbon County KY. It no longer has to come from Bourbon county But there are Federal guide lines to differentiate it from other American whiskeys.

All bourbon IS whiskey. That's what I've always heard.

So Knob Creek and Maker's Mark would be both bourbon and whiskey.

I used "Whiskey" in the title because I realize everyone doesn't drink bourbon. Some drink Irish Whiskey. Some Canadian Whisky. And Scotch Whisky.

Although, everyone should drink bourbon. We've got to jumpstart this economy.

THE BEST American whiskey is Michters single barrel.

Jameson is my easy drinkin' whiskey.

Regardless of where you're from, every single bourbon ever made was and is a whiskey. Not all American whiskeys are bourbon.

So for me:
Tends to be Jim Beam on the trail, or Jim Beam Black.

It's bottled by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, according to BourbonEnthusiast.com. And it's distributed by Chatham Imports.

The Michter's name is on 5 different whiskeys. I like the American whiskey and the single barrel Bourbon the best. It's hard to find around here, though. I used to drink them all the time when I lived in Athens, GA.

In NY it is beer and similar drinks at grocery and connivence stores. Hard Liquor and wine at liquor stores. They are open on Sundays but limited hours.

In the town of Pawling is a liquor store just up the street from the CVS. There is also a good little tavern 2 doors down from the Laundromat so you can put your stuff in and then go down a few doors for a bite and a drink.

PA has liquor laws that hikers from out of state find odd.

Liquor has to be purchased at state run liquor stores (as with VA's ABC stores). Until recently they were closed on Sundays, but some now have limited Sunday hours.

Beer can be purchased at Beer Distributors, but only by the case. For smaller amounts, beer can be purchased to take-out from bars and certain restaurants and pizza shops. The limit for take-out beer from these places is the equivalent of 12 16-ounce beers per customer (but in practice, you can take multiple trips). Some beer distributor also now have Sunday hours.

There is a liquor store right on the trail in Duncannon, and also a beer distributor.

There is also a beer distributor in Hamburg, near Port Clinton.

But for hikers I would really recommend going to bars, and at least as far as beer goes, buying take-out. A case is hard to carry.

Good bars through this stretch include The Beer Hunter Tavern in the Doyle Hotel, the Port Clinton Hotel Bar, and the Minisink Hotel in Delaware Water Gap (a little hard to find but worth it -- ask a local for directions). I believe that Mugshots in Palmerton (which I thought was a horrible place but others seemed to like) is closed.

My personal favorite is Maker's Mark and then Wild Turkey Rare Breed.
However, if you are looking to keep warm on a frosty night in the field, do what the midwesterners do when they go hunting - take a bottle of flavored snapps. I worked at a liquor store in Lincoln, Neb for a time and we sold a ton of it to the hunters every single day.

If it's a good high loft bag it can also help proctet you from the pesky drunk stumbles and falls. Or at least pad the fall.

BTW, I'm a crown royal man myself! Anyone here ever had Bookers? Good stuff but you gotta be careful with it...130 proof!!!

I've had Booker's. I know the actual proof varies from batch to batch since it's uncut but I think the stuff I had was 126 or 127 proof. I'd already been drinking Knob Creek that's 100 proof and I thought, "What the heck? Can't be be that big of a difference." I was wrong. Booker's is some STRONG stuff. It tasted amazing though. I'd like to get a bottle but its about $55 around here.

I have some uncut stuff that is also un-aged. It will boil water when lit in under 5 min.:D

Just moved from there and you're right, snapps is always a must for those cold nights in Nebraska.

Had Maker's Mark since moving to Tennessee and it is very nice; think I found a new favorite bourbon.

I'm a Scotch drinker. Single malt for me,a nice blend for those who visit.

or Feckin' Irish Whiskey .. :)
I've actually seen this a lot around here. There is a big chain (with liquor stores bigger than grocery stores) that carries it. Never tried it though. Apparently its good. :p

Technically, Drambuie is a liqueur made from scotch whisky, in the same way that Irish Mist is an Irish whiskey liqueur.

They have about half the alcohol of the real deal.

A "Rusty Mist" is half Irish Mist and half Drambuie, which is a nice thing to have a flask of on a cold night.
