FYI
I usually just use 91% rubbing alcohol for my experimenting, but the soot seems particularly obnoxious lately. and it costs nearly $3 per quart.

I found the quart of STX paint thinner alcohol had risen to almost $7 in price, up from a little over $4 when I first got in the game a few years ago.

But, volume discounting is alive and well. A gallon cost just $15.50 (or less than the quart price from the old days.)

I don't use an alcohol stove myself but as a maintainer I am always meeting hikers looking for fuel. I have met a number of folks who will use Heet. it's a fuel additive and pretty easy to come across. They say that it seems to work well. I now almost always have a bottle in the back of my car for those that need some.

Most places along the trail sell small amounts for around 20 cents an ounce give or take.
