old 1987 national geographic AT article [Archive]

Not sure how much bandwidth I have so this may not be up for long. Maybe someone else can host it.

I scanned an old AT article (28 or something pages) from a 1987 Feb Nat. Geo.

My dad (in australia) stole it from a doctors waiting office and sent it to me, I killed the binding and scanned it with works fancy scanner..

its 32mb (about 1mb per page)...

if I need I can give the link to my domain but I dont want to blow all my bandwidth just yet :)

National Geographic also had an article August, 1949, a year after Earl Shaffer made his Thru. Skyline Trail from Maine to Georgia. I Scanned it also, it has 34 pages.

If one visits ebay, do a search "Appalachian trail". Occasionally there is a copy up for bids.:sun

If you saved each page as an image you could probably put them all up on a site like photobucket which regularly host pictures. Then a lot more than 10 people could see them.

I'm not sure I like the reference to the 87 article as "old", but that just reminds me that I got that issue in the mail (and it's still in the library) close to ten years after becoming a Geographic member.

I also have Earl's article on CD. I need to go dig that out.

I PDF'd it to keep them together like a real article. I'll see what I can do, I should still have the individual images on my work computer.

National Geographic also published 2 books on the AT:

The Appalachian Trail (1972)
Mountain Adventure: Exploring the Appalachian Trail (1988)

Both were written by the same author - Ron Fisher. I didn't check their availability on e-Bay or Amazon. I've got 'em both but no sale!

I have been looking for an article I remember reading back in the 60s or so. I think it was in Readers Digest but could have been in Life. It talked about thru hiking the trail, about how thru-hikers got their food and a little about people who had disappeared on the trail. I've never been able to find that article.

Now that I just saw there's one in Reader's Digest, I'm onto the trail of that one too! Thanks to the poster for that tidbit.

Just to clarify, I said I thought it was in Reader's Digest, but can't be sure. If you find anything, please let me know. That article was the one that introduced me to the AT and planted a seed way back in the deep dark recesses of my mind.

Wow. I remember reading this article in high school. The photos were vivid and still remembered many of them to this day. I've told numerous people it is what got me interested in the AT. Thanks for posting!

I hiked from Waynesboro to Duncannon with the two guys (Ricochet and Droopalong) in the photo picking up mail at Cloverdale.
