If I am not mistaken that is a John-Phillip-Sousa-pack, manufactured under special contract by Les Paul.

Not a favorite with the ultra-light crowd, but I believe it has an optional water supply by spit valve instead of a bladder, which saves some ounces.

I saw that same guy carrying a load of instant hot cocoa mix, tubs of unsalted butter, and flank steak into the Lake-of-the-Clouds Hut in the Whites last year........COOL!!!

Isn't that an old Alice Pack frame?

Looks like it's built on an old Jansport frame. They had the "shelf" on the bottom and the metal connectors at the joints. Could possibly be wrong, but that would be my initial guess. Don't ask me which model. D3, D4? No fold-out hip extensions though.... Don't know

Watch out or somebody will try and start a cottage industry to sell the darn things complete or in kit form.

No. The Cabela's Alaskan Guide is based directly off and manufactured in conjunction with the Camp Trails Freighter Frame backpack that was sold by Eureka (Johnson Camping) for many years. (See below). I think that this might be an old Jack Wolfskin (or even a Berghaus) External frame. I had a JW in Europe in the 70's and I recall the frame having that angled aluminum tubing to support the shelf. I just cannot recall which model/make it was.
