I am shopping for a car camping/ base camp/ festival/ trail days tent. I will probably never have more than 4 people in it but want more space for gear etc inside. I am looking at 6 person tents and would like some feed back about what I am looking at or suggestions for something better. Right now I am considering the Big Anges Flying Diamond 6 or Big House 6 and the REI tents Hobitat 6 and Base Camp 6.

What do you think? Big Agnes is a little more expensive is it worth it?

Our Club rents the Hobitat 6. It is insanely popular. Stays reserved the whole summer.

My 2 car camping choices

I have a Sierra Designs Nomad 5 for Car camping. We love it. Very waterproof. They don't make it anymore. I guess the Bedouin 6 would be the closest to it.
I almost bought a Mountain Hardware Habitat last year. Either company makes excellent equipment....

If you go with BA, get the porch that comes with it. Six people can sit at a table under it.

Well it's been my experience with all tents that they are apparently made for munchkins. I have never been a "6 man" tent that slept anymore than 4 so keep that in mind. I don't have any specific advice on what tent to get other than get one bigger than the number you want to sleep. I've found they tends to be rated at about 1.3 times more than what is comfortable. so to sleep 6--with out getting to know then real well---you would need an "8 man" tent in most all brands.

Also I would recommend not getting tents that have a bunch of poles to assemble. One of my Scout Masters has one of those types of tents and it's a bear to set up at night which we do quite often.

Not after my personal use of the various 6 person tents from the big manufactures (kelty, Sierra, Big Agnes, etc...), but after tons of research, I landed on the Mountain Hardware Casa 6.

It has plenty of room for four and gear; however, I use if for the wife and I on go-kots and gear. The kids get their own tent. This is my second MH tent and I have been very vary happy with both. They retail for 425, but if you search a bit, you may even find one for 350.

I love my Bedouin 6 BUT it's a pain to setup solo and the fly is odd shaped. I seam sealed it when I first got it and have never had a leak. The vestibules are very good, front one is large enough for me to get under in the rain and I'm a big guy.

For my family I recommend the LL Bean 6 man dome with aluminum poles and add the vestibule.

Even if you don't go LL Bean pay careful attention to the fly coverage. My family car camps every July and I have seen so many cheap store bought models with minimal fly coverage leak and flood when other tents stayed solid.

Fly coverage/sealing and sealed bath tub flooring are key to any tent.

Good luck!

I recently bought a huge- at least 6 person- brand new Moss tent for 35$ at the thrift store in Gorham!

I have this tent, it compares very favorably with the northface basecamp tents and the sierra beduin. Better materials than the hobitat. Well made, simple to set up with only two poles. Most importantly, it has a full fly that goes all the way to the ground. two doors, two full vestibules. Plenty big for 4 plus gear.

Alps does a huge amount of business with scouts, these tents are made to hold up. I got mine at 50% off retail through scoutdirect.com

I've heard great things about the Hobitat 6.

When I faced this same decision I was torn between the hobitat and The North Face Trailhead 6. I got the trailhead 6 for a few reasons. It has two enormous vestibules which you can stand in and put pretty much any gear in. It also has two interior dividers so it has three rooms. It really does sleep six.

We used it about 4-5 times, and ironically every time it rained incessantly. The ventilation is not great when all the flaps are closed for two days, but even so the tent was comfortable, even cozy. My friends bought one too after staying in it because it handled two families so well. We even had a pack-and-play in the corner ad we all slept fine.

I'm remembering all of this because I'm thinking of selling the tent. I need a new sleeping bag and I can't figure out how to fund it, so need to sell some gear... :)

For car camping I use a Eureka Equinox 6. Big Room, weatherproof, and plenty of ventilation. WAY to big to backpack.

You really must check out Cabela's online catalog for excellent quality 6 man tents.
