I am trying to put together a database of outfitters stores in the east. The BIG BOYS like REi are easy to find. Do any of you know where a list of smaller, local stores might be found on the net? I am betting that between you all on Whiteblaze that there isn't a store anywhere you haven't found!

Hi Miss Janet, We have not met yet, but we will some day. I live in Central Florida and have a very good store that I trade with. They are Travel Country Outdoors. They have backpacking and paddling gear. www.travelcountry.com (http://www.travelcountry.com)
407-831-0777. They have good experienced staff and a large selection of most everything. They spent 4 hours with me last time I purchased a backpack. That takes a lot of patience for us both. They are located at 1101 East Hwy 436 in Altamonte Springs Fl. 32701.

Hi Miss Janet,
I'd like to put in a plug for my friend John McFerrin's store named Take a Hike at 100 Sutton Ave in Black Mountain, NC 28711. JJ is a former thru and has pretty much hiked and climbed all of his life. He carries just about anything a hiker would look for. It's only 20 minutes east of Asheville so stop by and tell him Tim said hello!

Don't try Campmor on Sundays. The infamous Blue Law is in effect. And While you are at it, since the BL forces everybody to shop on Saturdays, traffic is always a mess on 17. Buyer Beware.

I discovered this one recently and placed an order. They seem to cater to adventure racers (which makes older, outta shape ladies like me happy as well :<) )

I highly recommend this one for lightweight gear, reasonable prices , and WONDERFUL customer service!

Travel Country is one of the best in FL. Thankfully I don't have to drive there for every purchase as they also sell online. Sue/Hammock Hanger

I know that there is a small one called: Hike, Bike, Ski. They are small but have stuff a hiker needs. Unfortunately I could not find a phone number for them. Sue/HH

In MA, around my area, we have EMS, REI(of course), Natick outdoor store and others...If you'd like to know ALL the stores on the East Coast, you could always use a Dun and Bradstreet regional business report....it will give you names, addresses, phone #'s and basic products carried etc. I use these reports to analyze the market in New England for my folks hospitality business, but you could easily modify one for your specific needs...."one off" reports are fairly inexpensive for the minimal crit you need (names/locations?). Here's a specific link to the small business marketing page where you'd most likely want to start at: http://smallbusiness.dnb.com/find-new-customers/browse-products.asp?cmeid=eos200007

Check out the "marketing lists" pkg. This could help you nail down ALL the outfitters/shops on the EC.
Good Luck,

I will look into this for the future. Thank you for the information. What kind of "hospitality business" do your folks have?

They're reps for fairly upscale furniture, lighting and case good lines that supply existing and planned hotels, resorts, restaurants, casinos and their designers etc....like The Fairmont Hotel in Banff, Canada, Park Plaza here in Boston, Mohican Sun casino, The Capital Grille and many others....:)
