Thanks guys. I'll make an announcement when the books get back from the printer and I ship them out. I plan on making it the same day. I've got two thru-hikers planning to leave at the beginning of February, and if I have to print of a copy on my printer and mail it to them overnight to make sure they have something in their hand before starting I'll make it happen.

Based on feedback from a couple of orders I've changed the order page so you can order multiple copies on the same order without having to pay shipping on each book.

I found the "beta' version of this book to be invaluable. All the info a BMT hiker needs (other than maps) in a concise, easy to use format.

Good stuff!

I just got word from my publisher. They should be off the press around a week from now (most likely the 29th) and in the mail to me directly. Guesstimation is I will have them around the 3rd and I'll get them out the same time to ya'll. 2-3 day shipping via Priority mail.

As far as I know this time line is only bad for two BMT thru-hikers planning to start on the 1st. Anyone else that has ordered a copy or two and need theirs before then, please let me know - I will find a solution!

How often are you planning updates? Will things on the BMT trail change enough to warrant annual releases, or are you thinking every couple few years would do it?

I'm very interested in ordering one, but I know that 2011 is the absolute earliest I'd get to hike there.

If the thing breaks even this year I plan to do one next year. I've already started formating the new BMT guide for 2011. As for how much it changes, well this year it is about 0.7 miles longer than it was last year when I compiled my data. I don't consider it a major change. The big changes will be in service providers for the trail. I was planning to cut off any additions and only work on formatting and printing after November, but I kept getting more service providers hearing about the trail and the guide all the way up to when I sent it off to the printers. As of what I have now, there are already going to be more than 20 new services added. Things like hotels, shuttle services, groceries, kennel services, etc.

That said, there are enough services listed in the 2010 guide to hike and never have want of any more. It has WAY more data in it now than it did when I first put it together and used it in 2008.

Either way, your pick. If I had to make a recommendation in your case, I'd say wait until closer to your hike. If there is a 2011 version you can get more updated info. If there isn't, there should still be some 2010 guides available.

I am surprised no one has accused you of getting rich off this publication.

Really Rock, you have done a great service to the hiking community. I would reccomend you put changes and updates online somewhere for 2011. Even the Green Mountain Club creates a new edition of the Long Trail End to Enders guide every other year.

Keep up the good work!!!!!

I'm giving all my information that is in the guide to the BMTA webmaster. They have a section that is very outdated. My hope is to get updated information on that site. I figure a hiker can go to the website for planning and updates, and they can buy the guide so there is something easy to carry in hand for their hike.

I doubt the limited audience of the BMT would ever make me rich selling guides. I don't know if it would ever even turn a profit. I'm a maintainer and I see this as one way I can contribute to the BMTA. The only reason I don't do it as a BMTA project is I want total control of how I put the thing together and I don't want every update of design change debated in committee.

My thoughts exactly. On my DRT loop hike this past DEC I forgot my BMT data book and DWM's info. I had a map of course but I had not really had a chance to study it and "collate" everything mentally. I still enjoyed the hike of course but I like it better when I can anticipate what is forthcoming...old habits. That is usually the last thing I do at night lying in my hammock, just look at the map for what lies ahead. When I hiked the GA BMT I carried and read Homan's book on it.

SGT Rock
02-15-2010, 11:26
Speaking of the DRT. Something I am thinking about including in the 2011 guide:

My copy came yesterday. Nice job, easy to imagine myself on the trail as I look through it. In fact, in my mind I'm almost halfway through a thru-hike. Gonna take a zero tomorrow, though. My eyes are tired.

Thanks for the personalized inscription, Rock.

I have some nice trail guides written by some pretty cool hikers. I wish more of us would do this. Even though I probably will never thru-hike the BMT, I like having the guide.
