For hiking I prefer topos which show elevation changes, streams, and other things that can be difficult to see on satellite images. You may want to look at the same area with a topo map and satellite image and see which you prefer.

your right. i use satellite for kayaking off of google earth just so i can spot landmarks, but if you can read a topo they are best for hiking.

University of New Hampshire has scanned a ton of high quality USGS quads from 1950 +/-. The coverage, I understand, is for all of New England. The following is the link for the Bash Bish Falls quad, which includes northwesternmost Connecticut and Southwesternmost Mass - Everett, Race, Bear and surrounding areas.
