How safe it your gear when you are away from your tent during trail days? Or do you need to pack up and take it with ou each day.

Blissful
01-22-2010, 22:55
I would. Unless you are at a place where it can be locked up like in a friend's car or where someone can keep an eye on it for you.

Jester2000
01-22-2010, 23:27
You can do a search on whiteblaze for "pack" and "theft" or stolen pack or trail days and theft or any number of combinations. You'll find plenty of information and anecdotes.

Been there 10 of the last 12 years and have never had a problem.
I've read online afterwards about "huge number of thefts", etc. But I can't think of anyone I've actually met that has been robbed.

Do I leave my wallet, camera, cash, etc in the tent? Nope.
Does theft happen? Yep.

Be smart but not panicked and you will be fine.

Maybe explode your pack inside of your tent so that if someone wants to take your stuff they will need to repack it or sort thru all of your dirty clothes first.

I've always said someone could make some easy money by providing storage space for Traildays participants for a modest fee.

Was hanging at Mojos this morning and rumor has it that the town has given quite a bit of the toxic TD CG to the county for some new ballfields.

Local hikers were debating new alternatives and wondering why, along with where hikers would stay this year. Moving TD to Hot Springs was LWs suggestion and it does have it merits. The only thing I dislike about Hot Springs is they charge hikers extra to drink at the local pub(s?)!

Ya know... with the feel, the people, the good "vibe" you get at a hiking gathering, such as T.Days... one get an easy sense of trust for thier fellow hiker. Unfortunately, there def are some bad apples.

I have talked with a small handfull of fellow hikers that have been on the negative end of trail theft. And, I myself have had $ and a headlamp swiped from a hiker who I was volunteering with. This hiker went on to take over $2,000 from a church in VA. I suspect he we will never surface again or have his ass kicked in.

So yes, I would take a few minutes at T.Days to secure my items and not leave any gear around for the small number of clepto's that do exist at T.days..

Id sure like to catch one in action... best to you

Nean was passing time and the coffee house in Damascus. The town of Damascus may or may not have decided to build baseball fields on the same land that the trail daze campground is on. If they build baseball fields the hikers will need different land to camp on during trail daze because the old campground will be baseball fields. Lone Wolf sugested moving trail daze to Hot Springs and Nean thinks that may be a good thing.

I hope this helps.

it ain't about money. that land sits idle for 360 days per year. these ballfields have been in planning for a few years. it's the county that's building them. the town donated the land. children of the town and county are more important than hikers

I know the old ballfield gets a lot of use. It could be the best thing going in Damasus that brings folks together.

will they or did they tear down the old ballpark?

Chaco Taco

They could do it in Hot springs, there is a huge field across the street from the campground. It wouldnt be as big a Traildays which is a good thing.

The French Broad River Festival is a pretty cool event in HS so they have the know how.

I agree, its more about giving the children those ballfields.

The old Trail Days wasn't better...it was just different. I've only missed 2 since 1990 and I get to see more old friends now than I ever did. There is alot to do and see all day, everyday and the night time party is good...hell, beautiful surrounding mountains, good food, good deals on equipment, great friends and to be honest...I love the drunken mess! I can get solitude and peace in the mountains and wilderness anytime but I only get to have fun with certain friends a few times a year and Trail Days is one of those times. Don't change a thing, just let it continue to evolve as it has been doing since 1988.

I don't understand teh complaints about the party mess at the campground. If you want to get away from the mess, walk a few hundred more yards into the woods and set up camp. The campground parallels Shady Avenue for a very long ways after you walk past tent city. heck you can drive back there, unload your stuff, then drive back out to park in the parking area. There is no reason to set your tent up 2 feet from the next tent unless you want to. Its nice and quiet back there, you can build a fire, do your own thing, and then walk back into the active part of the campground at your leasure. I prefer the mathem of tent city, but you don't have to. The campground is HUGE.

Plus, I have never met anyone who said they regretted going to Traildays. But I have met plenty who said they wish they had. Traildays is so much more than tent city.

Well, the talk about Hot Springs was clearly labeled as suggestion, not fact. But you're correct in that someone new to the hiking scene (and I'm assuming that's true of guitboxdude) might not be aware that other locations mentioned were mentioned in jest.

Once you have been to TD's its fun but not something id do every year. It was fun experiencing it on our Thru and then going back the year after. Now we are just kinda like, ehhhh whatever. :) I really like grammar, and am a tiny bit anal about it.

(My own mother pointed out a birthday card: Front cover, two girls sitting, first girl: "Where's your birthday party at?" Second girl: "Don't end your sentence with a preposition". Inside cover, first girl: "Where's your birthday party at, bltch?" I don't correct the grammar of other people though. Usually. :D )

And question about TD- is there anywhere to camp where there truly is no crowd? I don't mean just less crowd, but an actually quiet place to sleep at night? I suppose I could hike out, set up camp, and hike back in each morning and night... But that'd be kind of weird. (Okay, I'd sleep where there's a quiet crowd.) Thoughts?

I suppose I'll either go, and just submerge myself in the crowd, or not go at all. Just have to figure out my mood.

Many people don't realize this, but the campground is much bigger than tent city. When you come into the campground, turn to the left, go past the gear reps, go past the car park, follow the road into the woods, and keep walking until you find your spot. You can spread way out back there and not have to set up within 100' of another tent.

Jack Tarlin

Hyway is of course correct, there's plenty of quiet camping if you're willing to walk a bit further into the woods.

That being said, make a religious habit of carrying your headlamp with you at all times at Trail Days, cuz the one time you forget will be the time you end up back at camp at 11 PM spending 45 minutes trying to find your tent!!

I paid the fee and found a good place to park in tent city on Friday last year. I also brought a bicycle and rode it around all weekend when I didnt walk. Never moved the truck 'till I left Sunday. Worked great for me. It was nice to be able to throw some stuff in the truck and lock it up when I was in town.

On this map, http://www.traildays.us/maps.html , it looks like they have tent city in two different places. The large, zoomed in map looks like its between the bingo hall and the ball field, but the zoomed out map shows it in the original location. I assume the first one was just drawn that way for convenience to fit it on the map.

If things are indeed going to be different in Damascus this year, especially as regards campsites, parking, fees/regulations, etc., it would help a great deal if WB people who actually live there keep us informed about this as things develop. They are kind of a unique resource.

Telling us "Things are gonna be plenty different!" is indeed news.

Telling us HOW they're gonna be different is useful news.

Perhaps there are no answers, yet, Jack.

This from the Trail Days website (http://www.traildays.us/maps.html):

Everything related to the campground and campground parking is currently being negotiated.

The old Bayer Property campground will be under construction as ball fields are built. Watch this space for the addition of maps which will show
the campground location and areas for parking,
as well as all other activity locations.

Change scares me. I like none of this. Personally I think the wishy washy attitude towards trail days is pretty elitist. "Ahhh me, but of course, everyone who is anyone has done trail days to DEATH. Been there, done that. Let it go."

I still think it's an incredible time, and I look forward to it all year. Isn't this change going to be similar to the shift when they moved everyone to the current (past?) campgrounds and away from the center of town. The only thing I would really be concerned with is breaking up the crowd into 4 or 5 smaller campgrounds. That would kill it. THEN I would admit that Trail Days is over.

it ain't about money. that land sits idle for 360 days per year. these ballfields have been in planning for a few years. it's the county that's building them. the town donated the land. children of the town and county are more important than hikers

When I was there this summer one of the Damascus leagues was kickin A$$ and takin names. Build the ballfields. Damascus is a great little town and its people and kids deserve to have something nice.

Id rather spend more time on the trail hiking or maintaining with our local club. Either way, Traildays is a great celebration of the trail. Meet some great people that make it possible for us to go out and hike these trails. Thanks to all that support the trail and volunteer their time, effort and finances to the trail as well all of those that tolerate the BS that comes with Traildays. Only a town like Dtown could do it. Damascus will always hold a special place with Team Chacopak. We love you Damascus!

Yeah but I enjoy bouncing from place to place. That's a huge part of the fun. It's a huge circle. Last year it was Miss Janet's, then the Birdcage, Billville, Kick Ass Cove, then Riff Raff. That's a solid 2 hours of conversation and drinking right there. If you put the little cults and cliques in separate zones, divided by a 2 mile walk, there would be no free-flowing movement from place to place. It would be harder to simply wander, meeting new people, finding things to argue about and ending up hating each other for while drinking their beer and starting blood feuds. (that's a joke. I buy way more than I drink every year).

Divided into small sections, it would lose something truly special.

Jester is already the mayor of Billville. And Billville already has a Sheriff and Chief of Police......
--------------------------------------------------

Zurely the city government doesn't think Damascus can handle
Trail Days without a very large lot of land to place hikers. If so, that is poor planning and very illadvised.

If there is not a set place to camp I see alot of towing and stealth camping going on, which will piss off the locals.

If a town is going to put on an event this big then and make the money off of it then it needs to provide the land. This isn't the Trail Days of 1995.....

Back in my day-'06 I stayed at the place run by the methodist church. They bought the next door house and you can camp on the lawn. Get there early. It is mostly quiet for crammed tents. Be sure to watch for locals dropping off food at THE PLACE. It goes fast. At the end some trail food that did not sell got dumped off, right into my pack.

I got there and some old guy volunteering asked my my name, I could tell he was making sure I was a real hiker- just smell me?! Anyway when I said johnny appleseed he said "oh bullsh%$." It was this old man raspy voice that I may never forget. Very funny. Maybe I should have kept my skirt on/off-can't remember. Also no theft reports from there as some reports from tent city-of course. Always cover pack w/ loose smelly clothing.

Things wont be changed much. Hopefully we will have a better campsite that isn't "toxic", doesn't collect water, and has level ground. Hopefully this will be the change we can believe in.
