Maybe 25 pounds in a month or 3 weeks or so. Came right back. The trail is no weight loss program, that's for sure. Your body gets used to the exercise.

I lost 35 pounds in the first 30 days...lost a total of about 50 pounds over a 4 month period. The first couple weeks I wasn't really hungry and didn't eat much. Later, I was hungry all the time no matter how much I ate. Then after I had used up most all of my body fat I didn't really get hungry anymore, I'd just get very tired and knew I had to eat something to get my energy back.

I started at about 236 and by the time I reached Harpers Ferry I was at 186 ( I usually stay around 220 but gained a few pounds just before my hike) I lost alot of upper body and had to start taking protein powder and finished at around 195. The protein powder really saved me on the trail.

AS Diane said, the weight may come off quickly, but it also goes back on just as quickly. The body gets used to a certain level of exercise. When it isn't getting it, the pounds pile back on.

I'm just over 5 feet tall and when I started my hike March 23ed I was exactly 150 lbs. By Trail days I was 122lbs according to the medic tent folks (which was so awesome, by the way!) By a month later I was at about 130lbs...Now, 4 months after my hike I'm about 135...but I feel like I look the same as I did when I weighed 150...def. not the smoking hot hiker body I was enjoying so much!

I only put back 10 lbs. But I have a bad gallbladder though (so I can't eat much). The trail life killed it. Probably have to have it out soon.

I was 167 pounds when I got off the trail...3 or 4 months later I weighed about 190. I maintained that weight for about 4 or 5 years, and then started to gain it back as I became more sedentary...I'm now right back where I was before my thru hike attempt...which is one reason why I thinking about doing it again.

I'm a woman, weight about 165 when I started. I weighed in at 137 at Jeff's place in Manchester Center VT.

Kept most of it off through most of the fall, exercising and eating right. It's true, your body obviously will react to you not walking 11 hr/day, but if you stop eating 6,000kcal/day too I think it's feasible to maintain. I still fit the celebration clothes I bought. Like others said your body is used to walking; this makes it MUCH easier to exercise when you get off the trail.

Started Springer at 165ish, finished at 142, though looked a bit emaciated when I got home.

At one point I had dropped 20lbs, but by the time I finished I was only down about 10lbs. I wish I had lost 30lbs. I always had extra food coming into town (not on purpose but I always seem to shop while hungry) and never had that hiker starvation.
