I've been planning a hike from Clingman's Dome to Stecoah Gap begininng Sep 21st. I saw the article on another thread about trail closures in Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests. Does anyone know if there are trail closures in GSMNP? Hopefully Ivan will move on through there by this evening.

You can expect blow downs and some eroded trail. I had expected to hike a section of the Mountains to Sea Trail in & around Asheville, and have already been warned by the Friends of the Mountain to Sea Trail http://www.ncmst.org/ that sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed, and the trails are in tough shape. Plus, there are more storms on the way.

You might want to check with the USFS and the National Park before heading out. Some of the trails in Nantahala might remain closed for a while. The flooding has been pretty severe in areas. Another good resource would be the trails clubs - in this case the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club http://www.smhclub.org/ and the Nantahala Hiking Club http://www.maconweb.com/nhc/

Just hiked Newfound to Standing Bear Farm this week. Trail blowdowns have all been cleared.

I section hiked from Hot Springs to the NOC (all the way thru GSMNP) and there were some blowdowns but not in the park as I recall. We saw plenty going up Snowbird Mtn and coming down into Nantahala Gorge. You shouldn't have any issues save for some trail erosion.

I just hiked Newfound Gap to Icewater Springs Shelter. The trail was great and there was plenty of water.
