The American Hiking Society is the national voice for America's hikers, and works to promote and protect foot trails and the hiking experience.

I'm not very familiar with this organization. Is anyone here a member?

Although I recognize that they do some good work lobbying for trails, I have been unwilling to join ever since they were so involved in building the ADT, a trail that is more of a bike trail than a hiking trail, goes from city to city, (hard to find campsites in Washington DC), and is only hikeable if you have support from a car to put out water in the desert sections. For a 'hiking organization', it seems like a waste of resources. There were a lot of other ways to make a cross-country trail, and following roads and traveling through cities is not my idea of good hiking.

there are loads of Hiking Organizations out there....this is just one of many...

a few do most of the work (just like in real life!) & the rest seem to just want your money for a few specific "pet" projects....

i give my money to my own personal interests...i AM a member of the A.T.C. (http://www.appalachiantrail.org)
& TN TRAILS Association (http://www.tennesseetrails.org/index.php)....that's all i can handle with my limited time. :D
