when you hiked the AT, what was your shortest day that you actually hiked? zero days don't count here.

WOW. Weird. I thought about this last night, asking "whats the shortest distance you've hiked in one day excluding bad-weather. injuries and in-town visits.

From what I remember, it was just over 6 miles from No Business Knob Shelter to Erwin

3.5 miles from Monson to the nearest shelter (I think it was 3.5, might've been closer to 3)
2 miles in the rain after hitting the trailhead on a Friday night. Unicoi to Blue Mtn

I've often camped a few miles outside town, then walked into town in the morning for resupply. Gives me the whole day to do errands and get cleaned up. Then we can either stay the night and rest the next morning, or just leave town late in the day. Saves money, but you still get a couple of good town meals.

Caught a shuttle into Gorham, NH so I could go to the hospital to get antibiotics for a seriously infected laceration on my knee.

1/2 mile. had to turn around and spend the whole day at overmountain shelter. weather too bad to cross the humps.

.3 miles one of the most gratifying hikes ever. a .7 was the next runnerup.my longest day was only 21
Wasn't there a guy a few years ago that started at Amicalola and the first day walked to the Max A. shelter about .1 miles away, then took a zero day.

Did a .1 outta Hanover one day when I ran into friends by the soccer field.
They said they were heading back into town to drink beer and catch the Sox game at 5-Olde.
Took about 10 seconds to realize this was a really great idea.

How long did it take him to reach Baxter?
Speck Pond in Maine (I think..which pond in Maine has a campsite maintained by the AMC???)
5 miles. I floated in a pink Barbie Innertube (skinny bearded 20-something. Classic!) that day provided by the caretaker. I read a book someone left at the lean-to while floating in the pond. The caretaker made myself and a SoBo brownies at night. Awesome day....
I still keep in touch with the caretaker via Facebook. :)

Not sure if this counts....
My shortest backpacking day was suppose to be a zero day.
Me and my kids were doing a Fri-Sunday with the plan of day hiking on Saturday and leaving the tent in the exact same sport Fri and Sat nights.
Friday various problems occured and we got a late start and arrived to the campsite well after dark. It wasn't suppose to rain that night so I didn't worry too much about where we set up tent.
Next morning I realized we set up the tent in a dry river bed and with a possiblity of rain for Saturday night, we removed everything from the tent and moved the free standing tent about 10 feet to higher ground, in the direction we were traveling. Then stuck the gear back in the tent and went on our day hike.
So 10 feet would be the shortest I have ever backpacked on a non-zero day.
.8 miles from Rufus Morgan Shelter to NOC.

0.3 miles, from Mt. Algo Lean-to to Rt 341 outside of Kent, CT.

-½ mile. As a NOBO, I went from route 19e to Apple House Shelter. A group of us was coming back from Trail Days to where we left off. No one wanted to hike for half a day into territory that, back then, was somewhat notorious for bad locals.

Same as Spirit Walker, if it was late in the afternoon and I was heading into a town the next day for hostel/resupply, etc. I know I only went 3 miles or so before going into Hiawassee and Monson. Never took a zero day though. It wears you down though. 28 miles was my highest.
The 3 or 4 amazing miles around Mt. Rodgers RecArea. People that fly through there need to chill.
