View Full Version : Class of 2011 - What will you miss the most?

I started thinking about this while making dinner tonight....

I'm going to really, really miss (besides my family of course!) fresh fruits and veggies. Dehydrating's just not the same. It's going to be tough going for days on end without :( ...

What will all of you miss the most???

On every single one of our LD trips we always miss the simpleness of a hot shower every day. That's it.

The joy of being on a trail or trek somewhere trumps the idiocy of our modern electronic lives.

Ice cream, Chocolate Candy

I have a piece of Dove chocolate at bedtime almost every night! ... think I could get away with packing that for the first few weeks, after that it may just get too warm. Of course, giving that up for a few months won't hurt my waistline any!

I thought of another thing though .... I go thru this on every trip actually. Ice. I use ice in all my drinks (even milk!). The thought of ice waiting for me in town will no doubt be enough motivation to get me thru those long days.

Once you get to the White Mountains you can find ice if you look, We came across snow and ice while removing soil from a large pile. If you dig or look under rocks you can find ice even in July and August.

exactly! ....precisely why I'm rigging myself up a hammock  ... the ground does not hold any appeal to me anymore, and the thought of laying in mice-ridden shelters is sort of disgusting. I've got a year to get it all figured out, but so far so good.

Fanfiction. I just love to sit down and read a long, well written, angst filled story. I'm going to really have to wean myself off of it before the hike begins, or I'll never last the first week. Thankfully I'm bringing two books with me to get me through (Good Omens and Watchmen).

My daughter loves fan fiction as well. I'm going to experiment with an Archos 5 Internet Tablet that is 3.5 X5 inches and 7 ounces. I want an electronic method to keep my journal, but also wanted to be able to keep some documents and things I make up here at home to have for reference.

One of the abilities of this will be to allow for electronic reading if needed, like fan fiction! ;)

#1 - girlfriend (of course)
#2 - food gluttony. eating pasta and packets of chicken/tuna just can't match to the indulgence of "hm, i'll go grab a burger" (or burrito or caesar salad) on a whim. But it'll be THAT much better in towns.

Turtle Feet, what kind of hammock are you using?

Girlfriend - #1 ....good call! ;)

About 2 months ago I bought a Nano 7 & a WBBB. Thinking I could carry the Nano until I need the bug net, and then switch out for the BB, sending some of my heavy clothing home with the Nano to help balance out the weight difference.

Nothing's etched in stone, but so far that's the plan. Do you 'hang'?

I say keep chemicals away from sleeping areas (even if they're extracted from flowers). A piece of no see um mesh works great for my homemade speer type hammock, and I'll be hanging with ya'll in 2011.

If I wasn't being so anal about the weight, I'd carry the Warbonnet right from the get-go. Comparing the Nano to the Warbonnet is something akin to a VW Bug to a Lexus. The Nano will do the job, but who wouldn't rather ride (sleep) in comfort. There is so much room in the WBB, you could throw a party!

I imagine that I'll eventually miss my family and friends; if I feel the way I do now this time next year, that longing won't come for a month or two, I imagine! :D

I won't miss the daily grind, driving somewhere for my every need, and watching the clock and counting away my time.

....ahhhh, well, at my age, I have pain and discomfort every day anyway - but, I did decided to switch out of a tent to a hammock. I'm in love! I bought one this winter and left it hanging, just to go out and relax from time to time. I will, at the very least, sleep comfortably.

My 19yo was home on spring break and slept out there one night... he agreed, we're going to avoid ground-sleeping at all costs. Check out www.hammockforums.net (http://www.hammockforums.net) if you want to investigate the options.

I've done several six month deployments in the Navy so being away from the family won't be anything new - never easy to leave them behind, but not new. I see a thru-hike as another six month deployment, but rather than being deployed on the ocean, I'll be deployed to the mountains.

What I'll miss the most is snuggling next to the wife at night. Sleeping next to one you love is much more than sex, it's the comfort you have of just lying next to each other in slumber. That is what I'll miss the most as that is what I've always missed during deployments.

RETCW4
03-29-2010, 09:00
I agree with you Fritz. When I retired form the Army I told my wife I had one more TDY (tempoorary duty) trip and it would be six months. My deployments were over a year.

Hope to see you all on the trail.

PS. Just did an 18 mile shakedown in PA this weekend. it felt good to be backl on the trail.

My Great Dane!

I am praying my father will bring his camper and set up somewhere up along the trail a few times so Louie can come up and see me.

Considering him and me have been side by side since he was a small pup it's gonna be hard leaving him.... and also when you think about how short Great Dane's lives are..... makes me kind of sad to think I will miss a section of it.

i will miss my work. its the best part of my day. its the most rewarding and the most fulfilling. ill love being on the trail and ill miss it when im off it but there something about my job that will always be calling me no matter what. ill miss my music. ill be bringing some but you can only fit so much on one MP3 player. ill miss my bed but ill be happy to give that up for such a grand adventure. i could list a dozen things that i will miss but, im happy to say, im whilling to give them up to gain this experience. now, if i can only settle on some gear to get. :)

Ice is one of the things I miss the most. When I did my section hikes it was the height of summer and nothing I drank was ever cold. Occassionally cool, but never cold. When I was slogging up some mountain in 95 degree sunshine sipping 85 degree water I would have the most luscious fantasies about ice cubes.

I will miss Jellybean and Pepé Le Pew and all their cuteness and adorable sounds.... They are my guinea pigs!! I saved Jellybean from a home where she was not wanted and just fell in love and then along came Pepé, my baby boy that looks like a little skunk! I have always wanted a pet skunk and he is the perfect alternative! I have tried to think about many ways to bring them along but it would be selfish lol Grandma will spoil them while I am gone! I have started taking them to Grandmas for little periods of time so it wont be a total shock to any of us. I never realized how great of a pet they can be.. I had read somewhere that guinea pigs have no personality and could never show love, this is the furthest thing from the truth! Now I sound like a pet store salesman lol

I find myself saying ALOT, "Is it March yet?" and "See, this is why I am going"..... It will be an amazing journey and I am thankful that I have found myself in the perfect position to finally do it! My lifestyle has already prepared me for this; I am overjoyed by the simpler things in life, not the things that make life simple.

I think what I will miss the most is my family. Luckily my husbands as crazy about doing a thu-hike as I am so I will have him and my pomeranian Meeka with me. But my family and two cats are going to stay behind in dear flat North Dakota. I have never seen mountains in person in my entire life. The trail is going to be so new and exciting for me, and my family will still be here when I come back.

08-04-2010, 19:34
Your taking your Pomeranian on the trail? I would re-think that if it were me. The trail is harsh on paws and joints for dogs as well as dogs can't go through the National Parks as well as logistical problems such as staying in shelters, hotels, hitching rides into town etc. I am not saying that it is not possible to hike most of the trail with the dog, just that it poses complications and 'ages' the dogs joints.

Thanks for the concern Turtle but I have spent more then half my life with a little dog up on my shoulders.I am letting her walk when she wants and I will carry her when she is done. I am also taking into consideration I will have to board her during certain sections of the trail, but that most are open to dogs. Also my husband and I are definitly staying in tents unless we have a shelter all to our selves, I wouldn't impose my crazy fuzzball on any one else lol. I would miss her too much to leave behind, for someone who has had a dog her whole life she is more like a part of me then just a cute k-9.:)

I will miss my friends, and I will probably miss my bicycle and a convenient means of processing and sharing the many photos I'll be taking along the way.

Life has taught me that I have no particular love of roofs, plumbing, cars, television, refined foods, or even air conditioning. The internet is more of a love/hate relationship. When I reach the end of the AT, down in Georgia, I'll probably take stock of my financial situation and how badly I miss my friends, and I may just keep on walking, down the Eastern Continental Trail route. I wouldn't mind a winter hiking through Florida. :)

I hear 'ya with the job thing. My husband and I had a conversation just tonight about how thankful we are that he's working - it's a shame that so many people are still out of work! Good luck with that!!!

I'm going to try my best to keep a trail log at Postholer.com I know that once I get out there and away from the daily technology, I tend to be less and less likely to use it. I'm guessing my start will be right around March 13th(ish), that's about all I know for now. :D

Who knows, maybe if I have enough fun I'll be back out there in '13!

I will miss the trail people after the end of the hike that I won't be seeing anymore. That's the way it has been on my all section hikes.

Hey! You will be Welcomed:welcomeon an '013' hike TF,
and I can relate with you Walkin Wally on missing those you section hiked with. I tried to keep in touch with some of the ones I met while section hiking, even got Christmas cards from a few of them.

I love hiking, camping, and the outdoors but I do miss my bed when it's time to go to sleep.

I said earlier in an earlier post that I wouldn't miss anything. Actually, I will miss poker. I'll probably bring a deck of cards but I'm afraid I won't find any poker players on the trail. I play everyday either in the casino or with friends. If I can't make it to a game i play online.

Any Hold 'em players?

I will really miss March Madness, especially since I'm starting early and won't see any of it. Other than that I don't know, probably chicken-fried steak.

Luddite, I'm up for a game of hold 'em. Who's carrying the chips? ;)

I know this sounds crazy, but I think I'll miss my job too! I work seasonal bird jobs, so I'm going to miss the spring and summer field seasons. But, that being said, I am definitely willing to forgo all that for this amazing adventure!

And, of course, I'll miss fresh baked cookies, being dry when it's raining outside (it is currently raining and I am sitting inside, nice and dry), and painting. But it's so worth it!

oh, and choices. food choices. clothing choices. etc. but I think that's part of the charm; when you come off the trail you will miss the simplicity of it all. :D I'm so excited!

I'll miss my bikes (both street and track) that I'm selling to fund the hike. Will be well worth it though. Going to Barber in Alabama for one last ride on the gsxr at the track next weekend!

I will miss being with friends and family celebrating the summer holidays. Especially the fourth of July, at the lake, kicking back with a cold beer and watching the fireworks.

The only thing that I think I'll miss is the convience of a Kegerator in my apartment. Nothing better than readily available cold tapped Sam Adams :)

I would miss that too.

Aaaahhh to be twenty again! :sun

My first couple of cars were pretty awesome (to me). The whole 'love to drive' thing wore off for me once driving equated to commuting, which of course equated to working.

Enjoy it while you can. :banana

I've been missing the trail ever since I got off it in 1999. Can't stand much more of that so I'll just have to switch to missing my dog Fleur and my daughters. I can call the daughters when I'm in town, but I wish Fleur could read my journal or something to be able to know that I'm coming back. You see, I think she's going to be missing me as much as I'll miss her.--Kinnickinic
