I am planning a section hike the 1st of May and need to leave my car at Harpers Ferry for 10 to 12 days. I would appreciate any recommendations.

Harper Ferry is the heart and soul of the AT, good people work and care about AT hikers there, I'm sure something can be worked out.

For extended parking most will use the National Park Service Visitor parking lot at the Cavalier Heights Entrance Station off US Highway 340. There is a one time park fee of $6. You must fill out a "Request For Overnight Parking" form that you present at the Visitor Center during normal business hours. The form can be obtained from the park website http://www.nps.gov/hafe/planyourvisit/index.htm

I've left my car with NPS, no problems. It is a gated and locked lot, so keep that in mind, must be back before they lock the gate for the night or wait til the next day.

Agreed the park service is good you just need to time your hike that you are not trying to get your car out when the park is closed won't work too well unless you do a lot of 4x4 action.

I see that the NPS at HP only allows up to 14 days for parking. I'm estimating it will take me 18-20 days to get there going south from DWG. Where would be the best place to park my car?

Sometimes Harpers Ferry National Historical Park will allow hikers to park in their main lot for up to three weeks. I'd call and ask: (304) 535-6298.

I had no problem leaving my car for more than the two weeks. Simply ask when you fill out the form and I suspect that permission will be readily granted. With the shuttle bus service to downtown, this is a great place to leave a car. If you have a Golden Eagle pass (think old geezer) even entry is free.
