I believe 1 liter pot size per person is the usual recommendation, You could probably get by with a 2.5 liter pot. The pre-package meals like Mountain House use 1 1/2 cups of water per single serving (16 oz.), 2 cups per double serve (20 oz.)
So based on that you would have to boil 4 1/2 cups min. for 3 single serving meals.
33.08 ounces equals 1 liter.
I bought this set for my Thru-Hike http://www.e-omc.com/catalog/products/5433/MSR-Quick-2-Pot-Set.html It's more than I need but would probably be a good choice for 2 to 3 people.

Go with two larger pots(1.0-1.3L each) and split them up among party. There are many reasons for this including FB failure(leak).

How close is this group? Everynight in same camp? Emergencies? Miscommunication... Maybe two stoves esp if a light Esbit emergency setup.

In my family we all carry our own pots.

Each should carry his/her own. If you were to get seperated someone would be doing without.

Ditto, we each carry our own pots and stoves.

And the biggest pot any of us carry is 0.9L or about 1Qt.

It depends on a couple things:
Are you family? Or friends?

When I hike with friends we all carry our own stoves and pots so we can eat when we want - no waiting for them if you are hungry and they are not. I usually carry about a 1 Liter tea kettle or simple pot.

If it is the kid and I or with the husband along we do one stove and a 2 Liter pot. We tend to eat together.

Bring separate pots for all the reasons above plus you can cook multiple dishes or food and beverage at the same time. It's more flexible and cooking is faster in the smaller pots vs. an equal amount of food in a larger pot.
