Yea that thread has a great amount of good information.

This is what I use. No mistaking it for anything else.

One word on fuel consumption in March - more.
You will use more fuel than you expect to use.
You will, of course, need to carry more.
Otoh, there's this stuff called wood, and a lot of people like to fire it up to stay warm.
Take advantage of this every night by putting your pot of water near or on the fire to cook your meal and you will, of course, use less fuel.
For a container use a Coke bottle wrapped with duct tape and put a skull and crossbones on it so you don't get it mixed up with anything else. Don't, however, use the bottle to store your emergency duct tape because alcohol will take the stick out of it with time.

No problem at all. Glad I could help.

A Tropicana OJ bottle works well. But even more important is some sort of measuring device (a plastic 35 mm film canister is exactly 1 oz.).

You'll use a lot less fuel if you measure each time you cook instead of sloshing.

Here's my experience
First year I used a 15 Oz. shampoo bottle with a flip pour spout. It leaked when stored inside the pack.

Second year I used a short water bottle (10 oz.) clear plastic fit inside my Heini pot. No problems

Third year I used a little round bottle around 10 oz. that I found on the road. fit inside the pot no problem.

This weekend. I tried carrying alcohol in a
trangia burner. It leaked. Tightened the top carefully and it leaked again. I brought an extra pint in a pint rubbing alcohol bottle and that leaked too, when stored inside the pack (pressure from packing tightly????)

In conclusion, I've had the best luck with free soda or water bottles.

Grinder, what came in the little round 10 oz bottle?

Another question I have is that I've noticed the HEET bottles are 12 oz(if I'm not mistaken) and DNA comes in quarts. What does everyone do w/ the extra leftover fuel if one is only carrying out 10 oz? Just toss it?

dogwood: have no idea. Sorry.
Like I said, I found it while walking. If it ever had a label, I don't remember anything about it. I picked it up because it fit inside my Coleman Max pot set.
Since it's an unusual shape, I'd check the kid's sugar drink area first.

regards resupply question, I've been told many hostels sell alcohol by the ounce. Never seen that on the southern end, where I've hiked, but then again, I've never looked.

1 pint Gatorade bottle works well. Almost indestructible and they are UL.

I use varied size plastic Sprite bottles. I know that I don't carry Sprite on the trail, so the green bottle reinforces to me that there in alcohol in the bottle and not to drink from it.

i use a small soda bottle with an off-colored cap. the little 10oz bottles someone mentioned are commonly used for water, sort of like those mini-soda cans. they usually come 'by the case' though. just check the garbage at work/office.

one trick i used, more so when my kids were along, and younger, was to use a different colored cap than originally came with the soda. the ring left when you break the seal is one color, and i told my kids not to drink anything that had a different cap color than the ring, just in case...

That's an "AquaPod" bottle. My kids drink those all the time.

One solution is to use pure grain alcohol. Then you don't have to worry about not drinking it.

I saw someone take a swig out of his alcohol-filled soda bottle. It wasn't very pretty, but he survived. That made me more cautious than ever. One great bottle I heard about was a mouthwash bottle. They even have measurements on the cap.

listerine bottle. i like it because of it's shape. i can slide it down inside my pack easily after all my other gear is loaded. also, it doesn't compress as it is a little bit thicker plastic than a soda bottle. i'm certain it weighs more than a soda bottle, but it works for me.

climber, the short round bottles are 10oz.

Listerine bottle. Has a child-proof cap, and who actually drinks the stuff, so you're not going to accidentally take a swig. Plus, it's a flat bottle, so it fits nicely in the pack (or an outside pocket).

Anyone ever actually drink their alcohol on accident? I carry a 20 oz soda bottle, and have never been tempted to drink out of it.

I have a Listerine mouth wash bottle.
It's a very different shape than my water bottles and the cap holds 3/4 of an ounce of fuel.

rubbing alcohol bottle (in case anyone asks: no rubbing alcohol doesn't work well as a fuel)
