There is a resonably-priced hostel/hotel in White River Junction, Vt--near to Hanover via free bus. It runs about $20 a night if you are a hostel international member, more if not--I think $30. You can access further information on the hostel site...

Here's the link to info on the hostel section of Hotel Coolidge:

Here's my review of my stay there earlier this month (the guy from Philadelphia):

Perhaps because they are remodeling, or perhaps because they don't want this kind of business, they did not offer a dorm style place to stay. Instead, I was given a one-bed (and little else) room with shared shower and kitchen privileges. Cost was $49 for the one night; payment was strictly CREDIT CARD ONLY. Yes, you read that correctly; the place does NOT take cash!!

The place is five minutes from the train station, which is a big plus for those using mass transit.

At least in Europe, they do have lots of quality hostels, check out this article for example in the newspaper; http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/24/business/international/hostels-gain-popularity-with-business-travelers.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Referring to the Hotel Coolidge as one step above a homeless shelter is a pretty low blow and though I haven't been there in a couple years, it is considerably above homeless shelters, where all kinds of nasty rules prevail. The CC only rule is probably for tracking purposes.
