Try any of the following: Campsaver.com, Rockcreek.com, CCoutdoorstore.com, Altrec.com, Backcountry.com, Joesnewbalance.com (for trail runners), Travelcountry.com. Basically just word search Lightweight Hiking Gear and you'll get a ton of sites but the above are one's I have used for over 2 years with great results and most have free shipping within USA not sure about foreign shipping.

Also, consider what he will already have that you can share/help carry- stove, fuel, tent/tarp, kitchen gear...
there are a few things that one must carry but will serve two or more...
have a great trip!

If you're online a lot you might monitor steepandcheap.com as well.

I second them. They have a physical location near me, and I'm probably going to end up with a very nice down sleeping bag for less than a hundred. Now if they just only carried shoes in my size. :(

If you have the time and willingness plus perhaps a bit of ability you could also consider making some gear. If this approach interests you, look at http://www.backpacking.net/makegear.html and
http://www.verber.com/mark/outdoors/gear/homemake/index.html

You might also look at the make your own gear forum at BPL (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/display_forum.html?forum=38&id=s7XebqvJ:63.226.214.46). That site also has pretty active forums for finding out about current gear deals and

current gear deals (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/display_forum.html?forum=20&id=s7XebqvJ:63.226.214.46) and gear swaps (buy and sell from others) (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/display_forum.html?forum=19&id=s7XebqvJ:63.226.214.46). This site, of course, also has a forum for folks offering gear for sale (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=69).
