That is uncalled-for.
Why would looking gay be uncalled for? The guy has the right to dress/prim any way he wants.
Their expedition reeks of reality show drama. Not even the AT is safe from that poison nowadays.
^That was one of the points I was trying to make.
Agree. What the heck difference would it make? Why would someone care?
I was saying this as a matter of fact. I didnt make a gay jokes or slurs. I dont care about who is gay or not. But 2 chicks and a gay(or not) guy attention whoring to get publicity for a walk in the woods.
I do live close enough to you to know that you live in a beach that even locals call rehomo beach. For those of you that dont know, Rehobeth beach is widely known around here for having a very high gay male population and tourist pull. I am guessing that weather or not you are gay you would be able to give advice. What would be the proper way to say someone appears gay? I am sick of this over political correctness. When are we not going to be able to refer to someone as white or black or boy or girl and the guy with brown hair.

I don't know any locals that call their town Rehomo Beach. Only some tourist call it that. And you spelled my towns name wrong. It's not Rehobeth, it's Rehoboth. Also, I wonder how you would know that the gay males here are high and what level of highness they are? Another thing, you failed to mention we have many lesbians here.
One more thing, you might want to inform folks that just about every beach resort on the east coast has a gay community in it.

worded poorly as usual. by high i meant large portion.
I know more about rehoboth than the average tourist. My Father lived there year round for years. I live in OC MD and had a gay room mate for years. While every beach town has a gay community in it, rehoboth is know for being more tolerant and open and having a much higher concentration of gays. In rehoboth you have one major road running down the center of a small town. where it meets the board walk they have this store.

Their sphere of influence is as big as you want it to be.
Hike ahead or behind them and they don't "exist".
Finally-I'm glad this was said about them! Its their hike, they are on the AT each day doing it their way (within reason), and thus its their time, so let them HYOH!

So, he's happy and having fun, big deal:rolleyes:.

Wow, cant believe so many people feel the need to hate on people they've never met. You would think that on a hiker forum on a hiker website people would be supportive of other hikers or at least not bash people they dont know. Sure they have put themselves out in the open but i find it sad that people are picking apart every word they have typed to pass judgement. If i was to make judgement upon people solely on what i saw they typed on the internet than i would be passing the judgement that the people on here who posted personal negative things about people they dont know are self absorbed tools with no life. These three hikers are very fun to be around and are going to make it to maine and i am sure of this because i have met them.

All these arguments seem very cyclical. People reading the hikers blog pass judgement on them and then people who know the hikers defend them and pass judgement on the people reading the hikers blog who pass judgement on the hikers, then the people reading the hikers blog who pass judgement on the hikers defend other people passing judgement on the hikers and pass judgement on the people who know the hikers... yada yada yada

I was going to be critical about that video, but you know what? She'll find out what the trail is really like when she hikes it- maybe she'll be right, who knows? Cut her some slack and let her figure it all out. Everyone hikes for a different reason, and LOTS of people are changed by their hike, even if they don't realize it at first.

Considering that they're currently past New York, I suspect they have a good idea what it's like (it's important to keep in mind that the post date of a video has little to do with when it was recorded).

Man, this is STILL going on?
Seems to me that the only people all hot and bothered about how these young people are hiking the Trail are people who either don't hike much anymore, or more likely, looking at some of the harsher comments on this thread, the comments come from folks who never hiked the Trail and never will.
I met these folks in Georgia about 3 days into their trip.
They're still out there, which, seems to me, means they've got around 160 more days out on the Trail than virtually all of their critics.
Seems to me that should count for something.

Well, it's easier, I'm sure. But a lot of comparatively wealthy people with no need of sponsors, may disagree. I had the funds to thru hike in 1993, but I found the trail to be both fun, and very difficult. I'm not sure "easy" is a proper adjective for any part of a thru hike.
Nor, I suspect, have many found it "easy" to gain sponsors. I suspect only one in several hundred, if that, get significant sponsor help.
These were three very bright kids, with a dream. They succeeded. We should all applaud -- regardless of their occasionally silly blog.

Of course you are right, Weary.
Perhaps if they billed themselves as a Dog Groomer, Letter Carrier and Cook, the reactions would have been different.
I hiked behind them a lot of the way along the trail. I don't think that they yellow blazed. They did the whole thing and for a group of 3 people, it's not a bad feat. Not many people thought they'd finish but they were members of a very small group of people who actually get to the end. Well done1

Many thanks for correcting the record. Not that an occasional blue blaze shortcut, or even an occasional short yellow blaze bothers me. Sometimes they are just a matter of being polite. I thought it a bit offensive, for instance, when a hostel owner drove us back to a point on the trail a half mile beyond the point we had left the night before, and one of the group demanded the hostel owner drive her five miles so she wouldn't miss that half mile.
From the beginning, I sensed the three kids would make it to Katahdin. I always thought the hostility mostly had to do with the claim of having passed the bar exam and having graduated from an Ivy League school.
People from many walks of life attempt to thru hike. But the trail is a great leveler. It seems it is best not to begin by highlighting differences from the general scruffy pose.
Weary
Actually, I thought the hostility was caused by the way they started off promoting themselves. They came off as pretty self centered and it stuck. Many of the problems that people had with them and some of the problems they had on their trip that they honestly talked about in their blog seemed to have been self-inflicted. However, congratulations should be given to them since they were able to finish which is more then many can say.
If they had only heeded the warnings and hiked some of our hikes instead of theirs, they would have avoided many of these issues. :p

Thru-hiking and filming a watchable movie at the same time is incredibly difficult. Far more difficult than thru-hiking alone.

OK, I hiked south thru all of Virginia. I met the Traveling Circus near where the Blue Ridge Parkway intersects the AT for the second to last time. I was hiking the Parkway, yellow blazing as I've done Virginia now 5 times. They were hiking the trail. If there is anywhere to yellow blaze this is it and they were not. I enjoyed Monkey's selter entries the rest of the way south and they were timed exactly correct. I next met them in Great Barrington Mass. while shuttling another hiker. They came into town from the south. I offered to take them out on Rt 23 effectively eliminating about 10 miles. They laughed and told me to take them were they got off. I do not believe for a moment they yellow blaze.
Also I timed my Virginia hike to see as many Nobos as possible. I also hiked CT, Mass, and southern Vermont recently. Not once, in any state, did I see a shelter entry by a Beefstick (or Dr. Beefstick). I am NOT claiming, like Dr. Beefstick, that there is no evidence that Dr. Beefstick has never made it east of the Mississippi, let alone thru hiked. I might have missed every single entry. Keeping track of other hikers must be very tiring, he must have been too pooped to write.

The odds of three people hiking the entire trail and finishing are not at all favorable so they deserve congratulations for what they accomplished regardless of any comments or impressions they may have made or reasons for hiking, etc., which are a different issue. If a thru-hike were easy, then 99% of people who attempted it would finish but that is not the case.
Congratulations to them! :)
beefstick definitly thru-hiked.

I'm not sure why the animosity towards their blog... as a fellow thru-hiker I thought it was great.

Hi Blue Jay, you probably remember us Ridley and Panther from the trail in Virginia and seeing you in Mass when you packed wine up for Sly Jangle to Goose Pond.
Beefstick is indeed a thru-hiker and we hiked with him for a good while in NC to southern Virginia and he completed the hike a few days before we did...about two weeks ago.
I can't say for certain if the Circus blue or yellow blazed, I know they slacked a lot of the time, but as for the other...well, that was their hike.
They are nice people despite how they hiked or how they live their life. Just people, out hiking, just like every one of us out there this year. Gossip is gossip. Whatever.
Well, walking a road isn't yellowblazin... its blue.:)
I've only met a few who actually care if someone misses a few whites for blue and discredits thier hike. I consider it (elitist ego) in the same way I do with all the yellow "thru" hikers. Its a character flaw that humors me much more than it upsets.;)
On the trail titles don't matter-- so leading with titles has a bad smell.:( I'm sure that plays well to the general public, but not with hikers themselves.:-?
I actually hung out a little longer in Pa. just to meet them, after all I heard and read.
They seemed pretty normal to me, having a good time, friendly.:)

Blue Jay, I'm quite sad you forgot the heartfelt conversation we shared as you were coming up from Jennings Creek. It was shortly after this that I yellow-blazed to Abol Bridge (it didn't matter cuz I already hiked that stretch in 03).
It's ironic that your comments about my lack of shelter entries call into question your own hiking claims. Among other things, in the shelter logs this year I documented a 300-mile courtship of Lightning through NC/TN, backstabbed my hiking partner Dark Star in southern VA, and accused LT hikers of being the posers that they are in VT. Come to think of it, I only saw one entry from you in the shelters. Now who's the fraud?

You can skip sections you've done before and claim to have thru-hiked? That's fantastic. I'm going to go ahead and claim a thru-hike for this year. I didn't do any hiking, but that's okay (cuz I already hiked it all in 2000).

And a lot of us who hike regularly can do the same. But claim to whom? ATC issues a page or two of suggestions for those who want to claim 2000 MILE STATUS at least as defined by ATC.
Frankly, ATC is engaging in a gimmick designed to suggest to hikers that the trail is pretty much a creation of ATC ands its member organization, true enough as far as the claim goes.
To my knowledge, however, no one else does. Though from time to time they suggests some minimal ways of adhereing to ATC desires.

I'm pretty sure Beefstick was being sarcastic in his statement of "yellow blazing because he's hiked the section before". Come to think of it, I only saw one entry from you in the shelters.
I did not forget that conversation, however I did forget your name. I apologize for that. Actually you proved my point on why you should not accuse anyone of yellow blazing as it is very very easy to miss a thru and assume they are skipping.

I told you, IN PERSON, that I hiked 700 miles so far this year. I have never claimed a thru since 1998.
Sorry Jester I thought you were talking about me. I guess my reading skills are dropping fast.

Thanks to everyone who has kept this thread alive, and followed our blog for the last five months. And most of all, thanks to all of you who believed in us. It's been a great ride.
For those of you that are interested, we plan to continue posting on our blog to discuss the transition home. We've heard from former thru-hikers that this transition can sometimes be very difficult, particularly because many of us return to lives that do not include other thru-hikers.
I have posted one entry, and the other members of the Traveling Circus will soon follow suit. To read, click here: http://appalachiantrail2010.blogspot.com/
We also plan to keep people updated about our documentary through a listserv. If you would like to be on that listserv, please email us at:

Thanks again everyone!

Considering that you signed a waiver, the way to get them to honor your request now is probably not accusing them of narcissism on a public site.
yeah, narcissistic people usually don't consider others' feelings when making decisions. only their own. you're probably screwed.

All I'm saying is, whether it's an accurate assessment or not, saying so isn't the best strategy to get what you want.
If someone I filmed had emailed me privately and requested that I not put them in my movie, I would have honored that request. And the two people who, while I was filming, stated that they didn't want to be in it? They're not in it.
But if someone publicly said crap about me and then asked me to not use footage of them? I suppose it would depend. If it was good footage and I didn't have coverage for what that shot portrayed, I'd be inclined to tell them to pound sand.

accused LT hikers of being the posers that they are in VT.
Ha ha, I read that one, that s**t had me laughing. Apparently some folks on the LT had no sense of humor last year. You should have read the next two pages in the register, I thought they were going to get a militia after you. BTW, I don't think you're welcome on the LT, or in Vermont for that matter.:D
I could watch a few minutes of Emily smilin'. Tell her a Maniac thinks she is easy on the eyes.

Just a word of advice for the future: refrain from saying 'um'.
Wouldn't mention it except that you said it in almost every sentence, sometimes twice in the same sentence. Kind of surprising for an attorney. but maybe you are an office attorney and not a trial attorney.

But it's also forced me to pay attention to my speech more, so all in all a good learning experience. Can't improve unless you know something's wrong! Thanks for the tip, Trillium!

They don't call me Ringleader for nothing, Furlough. Haha. But joking aside, that means a lot to me -- more than you know. When you push boundaries you're asking for criticism, and I respect that and know that it comes with the territory ... but you have been supportive of us from the very beginning and we are forever greatful. The haters provide entertainment, but you provide inspiration. And I hope you know that part of the reason this film came "to fruition" was because of people like you. So thank you.

I'm taking Beauty Beneath the Dirt on tour this summer from Georgia to Maine; calling it the G2M Tour. I am so excited to share it with all of the communities along the AT that helped us and countless other hikers on our hike, by sheltering us, encouraging us, maintaining the trail, etc. Shoot us a message if you want me to come to your town!! I will try my hardest to make it!

Also, did a test-drive of the screening process last week in San Francisco. Absolutely incredible - I could not have hoped for more. People laughed, cried, applauded, gasped. I wrote a blog entry about it and some other notions here: http://www.beautybeneaththedirt.com/2012/04/leavingstaying/ More blog entries to come this summer! Trying to post one after every screening! 60 days on the road!! Woo!

Is it stricty "commercial" in it's intent, or is it more sharing information about events the WB community would be interested in? I also agree with Mags that if they do financially benefit from the publicity this gives them, a donation back would definitely be appropriate.

A number of our screenings are free to the public; We've talked with Mags about this via email that we will gladly contribute if and when we use this site for profit. The G2M Tour has very much been a joint event with the communities themselves- where this is profit, it's split with the local arts council. Where an outfitter helps us advertise, we return the favor by talking them up in press and through our outlets- we've also held a number of free events at these outfitters where we talk with folks about gear (that people can then buy in the store). To date this thread has been used to provoke discussion; should people who read this thread actually attend a ticketed event I will gladly donate to Whiteblaze....
PS Alexis did a great job of explaining the work involved in putting this project together. She's also just a great travel writer. More info here: http://alexisgrant.com/2012/07/04/what-it-takes-to-succeed-at-your-passion-project/ - feel free to discuss...
