Whatever you do, don't name her Katahdin or Springer or Kaya.

My favorite dog name of all time belonged to a dog owned by one of my aunts in Ireland, who also had a cat.

The dog's name was "Deefer." When people would ask her why she named the dog that, she would reply "D for Dog." (And that's actually how the dog was usually called -- "C'mere, Deefer Dog!")

When asked what her cat's name was, her reply was "Seefer."

So my vote is for "Deefer."

Crazy cute puppy, by the way.

How about "Pamola" after Katahdin's subsiday peak?!
According to the Abenaki Indians, Pamola was a bird-spirit who lived on Katahdin. It was considered a thunder god and protector spirit. Despite the avian characteristics, it kinda sounds like a dog to me!

She looks like a killer, though. You'd better warn the mail man... :)

We went through the same thing when naming my little, not so little anymore, guy we kept trying different name son him for about a week but he just seemed like a Hank. He is part border collie and so Hank the cow dog fit. Get a few and try them out. I guess you could always just call her Blaze.

My vote is for "Moxie". Meaning daring, or courage and is also a lake in Maine and a mountain and a soft drink.

I like Moxie for a name. Also the name of a thru-hiker from 2000 who has since passed away.

Name her DOG (prononced DEE O GEE). I had a lab by that name and always had fun when people asked how to spell his name. Most people take about three times to figure it out.

How about "Ye" (or "Yee) as in "God Rest YE Merry Gentlemen". You could go around shouting: "Here, Ye! Here, Ye!" :)

Perhaps "Quat" (rhymes with "Squat"). "Come, Quat! Come Quat!" :D

The dog is a female. So, maybe name her "Miss Kitty", or "Kitty". Imagine being in a public area and saying: "Here Kitty!" and a big Black Lab comes running up to you. That would be good for many laughs on the trail or at a park! :-?

Other, more mundane, possibilities:
Licorice, Onyx, Storm, Shadow, Shade, (If a hunting dog, Lady Remington), Nova, Ebony, Raven, Satin, Smoke, Pepper, Jet, Twilight, Dusk

Black or dark in other languages:
* Devaki – black (Indian)
* Duff – dark, black (Gaelic) (Maybe, "Duffy". Duffy the Shelter Mouse Slayer?)
* Dulais – black stream (Welsh)
* Jedda – jet-black gemstone (English) (or Jetta?)
* Melaina, Melaine, Melania, or Melanie – black (Greek)
* Mellie – black (Greek)
* Montsho – black (African)
* Sable – black (English)
* Schwartz (German)
* Noir (French)

Growing up, a dog in our neighborhood was named Dammit. The owner would stand on his porch and holler "HEEEEERE DAMMIT!" and the dog would come flying down the street.

Great looking pup. First thing that popped into mind was Rooker. I have no idea why.
