Im leaving tommorow morning to head down to Amicalola Lodge, but before I went I wanted to give my deepest thanks you to everyone on this site. I was on WB almost daily while in the planning stages of my hike and the amount of information I obtained from this website is priceless. I read several "how to" books on thru hiking but nothing even came close to what I learned on here. Once again thank you everybody.

P.S. If you are interested you can follow my hike at trailjournals.com

Thanks again,

Hope you're ready for what's out there and prepared for full winter camping in high snow. It aint pretty...well, Im sure its pretty scenery-wise but it is gonna be very, very tough conditions. Take it easy. And yes, take a good tent.

Be aware another snow event is coming. Make good decisions especially when it comes to the weather. Not trying to be a downer, but you may want to wait til after the weekend. The weather is looking much better for next week.

Either way, good luck, its a great trip!!!

Slow and steady. Seek shelter early and often in the first month or two.

Good luck with your hike! :)
Btw: All that helpful information was made up :D.
Not one of us actually hikes ;).
We just sit at the computer all day thinking of cool new outside the box things to tell other folks to do,
Then we sit back to see what happens.;)

Good hiking out there. Let your brain rule not your testosterone and you'll be fine! I wish I had tried it when I was your age. You'll be a better man for the rest of your life.

I always start every class period (Am History, World Religions, Sociology) with some kind of story to warm them up and bring them back into our classroom community. They know of my "AT bucket list" (entire trail map on my classroom door!). I will open my Friday classes with the exciting story of your journey. No exaggerating when I say how many of my kids think thru-hiking (or at least the idea of it) is way cool!

Stay strong, trust yourself, but accept and learn from sound advice, use common sense and don't forget to look around more then your just your feet hiking those 2000+ miles!
