curious of those so gracious thru hikers out there what you used... boxers, briefs, underarmor type thing. I have done some decent hikes and wear boxers and have never not had significant chafing all up in my business. Ive heard the tight underarmour type thing works well but ive never tried em. thanks for your help :P

Wickers briefs from campmor - have kept me dry in situations where cotton briefs would have to be wrung out several times. FROM SWEAT!! $15, but worth it. Have sectioned hiked 50+ miles several times, wear them for 3 days, rinse, wear them another 3 days.

As as lard arse (246#) with huge thighs, I have always had chafing problems, I started wearing Under Armor and haven't had issues since. They are a bit warm, and they start to stink quickly. I always change into boxers, as soon as I'm done hiking.

I will tell you what not to do...

On a section hike in June, 2000 from Davenport gap to Roan Mtn, (before Under Armor) It was particularly hot and humid. I was wearing nylon shorts with mesh. As the day wore on the sweaty irritation between my legs became unbearable. I was in agony with every step. Since I was joining my buddy on his thru, I didn't want to slow down...or show weakness. I hiked ahead a bit and cut out the liner in the shorts. I hiked for a bit more. This was no help, the irritation was lower. After a few more steps I came up with a brilliant plan. I would use my duct tape and wrap both thighs to keep them from rubbing. I thought if it works on feet for hotspots, why not my entire inner thigh?

Happy about my innovative solution, I sat down, dried my legs from sweat and proceeded to meticulously wrap my legs with the handy man's secret weapon. Having executed the procedure flawlessly, I went on my way happy and pain free.

It was about 10 minutes later, when I stated sweating profusely again that the problems arose... Who knew that duct tape doesn't stick to sweaty skin? I thought it stuck to everything. Well, sweaty skin - no... but hair yes. The carefully wrapped bands of tape started to shift and move taking hair with each step. I thought this form of torture and agony would end. After all, It wasn't as painfully as walking before and I only had so much hair. Or so I thought.

As I started to descend the next hill, I started to sweat a bit more and quicken my pace. It was then that it happened - The tape shifted a bit too much, the tape ROSE up my leg, and found the holy grail of hair attached to my scrotum. I tried to stop, but I couldn't quickly enough. In the next few steps, the wraps from both legs were attached to each other, and (arguably) the most sensitive part of my body. I went to the ground out of fear for my little bit of manhood. At this time, I tried to extricate myself from the mess of hair and tape as quickly and carefully as possible. About the time I had removed my shorts, and was laying the better part naked in the middle of the trail, my buddy comes loping along.

He didn't say a word. He glanced ever so quickly as he side stepped me and kept on walking. I guess there are some things that even your best friends aren't willing to help you out with.

Needless to say, I got a warm reception at the next shelter from my buddy and the group of people he was telling about me. I also got the pleasure of being know as 'SilverBalls' for the remainder of my time on the trail.

Ex Officio boxer briefs. After I lost a bit of weight on the trail, they started to fit loose and I started chafing. I went to one size smaller and problem solved.

why does this remind me of those ben stiller movies where he plays the structured yet always good intentioned guy that has a moment of "brilliance" to fix a solution yet it only turns into further tragedy

Hard to believe that this thread will turn up much that's not been already well thrashed through in so many threads along this line already, to include relatively recently:

I do NOT mean to be derisive or abusive or anything like that with the suggestion of searching whiteblaze for recent threads on a topic before starting another clone thread --- but I do think it would be a good idea.

I normally use Ex Officio boxer briefs that have sort of anti-bacterial treatment built in (because after a week of daily use, you need it). They are lightweight and dry fast. No matter what I wear, I never have chafing as long as I keep my pants properly pulled up to my waist so that the crotch of my pants doesn't rub on my inner thighs.

I have used the Champion C9 boxer briefs for both hiking and SCUBA diving. Target sells then for $9/piece i believe.

They are extremely comfortable & dries fast since its made with the Duo-Dry material. It's almost a must have when you are diving with a 5 mil wetsuit on.

good luck!

I learned back in the mid-70's while doing my time in the army as a straight-leg infantryman to use anti-perspirant to prevent chaffing and also to help prevent blisters on your feet. It's the sweating which causes both conditions. I hope this helps

While I dont normally laugh at other peoples misfortunes, I just couldn't quite help myself. If you didn't go into such great detail of explaning it probably wouldn't have been as funny! Sorry for your Silver balls!

But then you are using little shards of aluminum to block sweat from coming out of your body.. sweat has toxins in it just like your urine and feces, would you stop either of those from coming out? Your best bet is to use body glide or butt butter or a similar anti chafe product, they grease up nice and let you sweat freely (plus, I think it feels great to sweat out what feels like a gallon or two of water on a strenuous hike).
