Springer to Damascus 4 sure. Will decide then if I will keep going. Speaking of which, I know it's waaaaaaaaaaay early, but I'll be looking for a ride from the Gainsville GA Greyhound station to Amicolola if anyone is planning on passing through that way around March 10th or so.

I haven't given any serious planning as to how I'm getting down there. Probably fly or Amtrak (from Milwuakee), but then what - I don't know. I'm guessing I'll be arriving around the 11th or 12th to plan a 14th or 15th start date.

I plan to hike from SNP to Katahdin starting around 6.1.2011. But, I haven't ruled out starting from GA in April. I hiked from Springer to Harper's Ferry in '91. Either way, we'll all be on the trail about the same time. :)

Well, here I go -- count me in if all goes well in the homefront! All I can think about is hiking! I started a thru-hike in 2009 and ended up with a stress fracture in my foot after 400 miles. It has taken me this long to just be on my foot any length of time. I will be conditioning for the next year!

I look forward to seeing you all on the trail. I hope for a mid-March start.

That makes me so nervous - the idea of a stress fracture! How disappointing that had to be for you!!! Happy to hear next year will be another start. What are you planning as far as conditioning?

Are you in the LP or UP? I'm about a mile from the WI/UP border.

Why the heck not? Life's too short, right??;) I initially thought April 2, but I know I'm going to be getting a slow start (slow & steady win the race, right?), so I'm giving myself a padding at the beginning. Thinking around mid-March. I'd like to be at Fontana Dam on the 31st. Our wedding anniversary (#25) is on 4/1 I'm planning right now to meet up with the hubby there.

You know, if for some reason I couldn't finish the hike this year, I would definitely try and try again....but that's just me. :sun

I w/o nearly everyday, but I have hip 'issues' (take Celebrex for arthritis). I want to up my walking over this year. If I can get myself up to some reasonable mileage 4-5x/wk I should be in good shape. I'm ok as longe as I keep moving, it's when I stop that it becomes a problem!

I'm still trying to convince myself that quitting my job isn't a really bad idea in the current economy, but I'm definitely leaning toward hiking next year.

Single, no kids, living in a town I only sort of like and working at a job I mostly don't like, but it pays the bills. No time like the present, right?

Should be leaving ~March 1st as I'll have a free ride then.

Tried in 09. Made it to Front Royal before I got sick and hurt myself trying to keep hiking while I was weak. Planning on hiking out of Damascus from Trail Days 2011, because Virginia was one illness and injury after another, and finishing what I started.

See yall out there!

Ooh, I'm so excited - first hopeful sign hubby may let me do a modified southbound hike in '11. Need to get VA done though so that part is completed (and I won't be away from home base too long). Of course also have to see where my work stands. But it would be ME to Penn Mar, PA and then Damascus to Springer (with Penn Mar to VA finished up this year). Can't do a true thru but close.

lol... well think of it this way - you wouldn't have had the money to do it when you were 18 any! I know I wouldn't have.

I don't know what part of TN you're from, are you near the trail? Either way, you can certainly get in some challenging weekend hiking, and if you can get some longer trips in before next year all the better.

Gear doesn't have to be expensive, the lighter it is, the more it costs, but you might be able to pick up some good deals on the forums here this summer as some of the spring starters have to drop.

Think about making a list of what you need and posting it here as a "Want to Buy". ;)

Ha! Someone for Florida liking the cold. That's about as common as catching a bucket full of snipe in one night. I have a bunch of kin in the Orlando area and if you listen to them one would think its the coming of the apocalypse if it drops below 40F.

Congratulations on setting your start date. I will be taking off around mid-March so we probably won't cross paths (who knows though) but I will keep an eye on the log books.

Will start mid to late March depending on the weather. Will take the Milwaukee bus to Atlanta via Chicago. The bus stops in Chicago for a layover to Atlanta. The bus is much cheaper than the train and the bus drops off in Atlanta near a MARTA station which you take north to the north springs MARTA station. I recommend using the services of the AT Hiker Hostel run by Josh and Leigh Saint who pick you up there and take you to the Dahlonega Hostel for the night. Then after breakfast they take you to the trail, either at the visitors center for the approach trail...or to the top for the actual trail starting point.

I'll be starting a nobo thru-hike in late february 2011. I would love to hear from people thinking the same thing.

I just did a fifty mile tune-up hike on the knobstone trail in Indiana. It was so damn hot, but I felt strong. I am ready to do the AT.

My trail name? "menochewbacca." (a roundabout sasquatch reference-- I'm 6'6" and 220 lbs.)

I'm a 36 year old married male, college English teacher/poet. Originally I'm from NYC, but I've lived in Louisville, Kentucky for many years. If you want to start in late february 2011, doing lower daily mileage (6-10 miles a day) in the first month of your hike, then consider contacting me. Mature hikers welcome. Sensible (meaning safe) twentysomethings welcome too.

Depending on how I like winter backpacking on the Finger Lakes Trail here in upstate NY, one of three things will happen: I'll start out early and follow the North Country Trail from where it goes by my house up to where it pretty much meets Vermont's Long Trail, then head to where the Long Trail coincides with the AT and then take the AT up to Katahdin. Then spend a week visiting my best friend in Bangor, and then start a SOBO by mid July. If this plan goes into action, I figure if I even make it to the AT then I should be good for the rest of the hike.

Or if I want to start a little later I could take a bus to NYC, get on the trail there in Harriman or something, North to Katahdin, visit, friend, then SOBO.

Or if I really can't start early, I'll just take a bus up to Maine, visit friend, and then SOBO.

But basically I want to be on the trail as soon as I can and don't want to transport myself all the way down to Georgia. Unless I'm doing the transporting with my feet, of course.

If I decide I really really like the walking I might just swing down the MBT and APT to the Florida Trail for the winter and then I'll be a 2012 NOBO as well. ;)

Just finished a day hike ( climb ) on Tumbledown Mtn in Weld Me. We took the Loop Trail which is quite steep and maybe a few degrees short of using technical climbing equipment in places. My energy and stamina levels were fine.

Next is a hike of the Grafton Loop Trail at Grafton notch in Maine. This is 38 miles long and will be a shakedown hike. I'm still battling plantar faciitis in my left foot, I hope I get rid of this before March 2011. I can hike okay but pay for it the next day.

Hope to see you all in March 2011.

OMG if my husband and I could swing it we'd love to start at least April 1st. As is right now were planning April 25thish. We pretty much are talking about nothing else right now lol our family is getting tired of hearing about it. We just have to get our finances together and we're golden. I can't wait to meet all the new experiences trail life can give, and all the new people. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO exciteded, and I'm not a patient person to begin with.:p

Either way, I'll be hiking it and taking the year off from college. Can't wait! Heading to Springer Mt. this weekend to hike a two nights and check out the start of the trail. I climbed Katahdin the second weekend of Sept. with my father and it was great.

Looking forward to the hike!

Well I plan(ned) on starting 3/31 with my husband and friend but I tore my meniscus and have to have surgery on 11/22. I'm hoping that 4 months recuperation and rehab will allow me to hike. It's such a bummer. My husband is walking 5-8 miles a day to keep in shape and I can't even walk around the block.

I have lots of motivation to get myself back in shape after surgery!

Hawks-eye, I took the bus from MD to GA, never again will I ever put myself through that torture. 23 hours of crying babies, switching buses, odd smells, and drunks puking in the seats behind me. Call me what you will, but I booked a train ticket this time, hopefully it will be a little better...

Leaving 3/27/11 from Woody Gap.

Hurt back last year before I started hiking AT and started hike anyway. Hiked from approach trail to Woody Gap where pain got too much. Will start where I left off at last year.

For those hiking 2012 all I can say I is that learned a lot on my time away from the trail. Have gone on more hikes and improved my gear. The other good thing is that this past year I took my wife on a backpacking trip. She loved it so much she'll join me on the trail at Harper's Ferry. She plans to finish the trail with me. It'll be so nice to have her with me.

Last year would've been good but this year will be great!

That Guy,

You have given me hope. I am planniung to start this April, I fell on the AT back in November and found out New Years Eve that I have a bulging disc. Spent NYE in the hospital.

Thought I would have to postpone until next 2012. I see the neurosurgeon on Friday. Hope I can do therapy and be ready by April. If not, I wll be ready next year.

Tumbleweed,

I hope you all the best with your back issues. I know it's not fun. I was very upset when I had to leave the trail last year. It was difficult hearing for months from people I had met making their way on the trail. When a few made it all they way to Katahdin I was happy for them but determined for myself to return to the trail.

A man I head from who returned to the AT a year after he started because of health issues told me "When it's right for you the trail will be there. It's not going any place."

I thought of that often in the past year.

GOOD LUCK!!

After my meniscus tear suregery back at the end of November I have been struggling back to health. The tear exacerbated back problems and IT band syndrome so the doc said "no go" this year. I'm bummed. I have to stay home and be a backpack widow.

However, my husband and friend are fired up to go and are starting their hike on 3/28/11
