Just curious what do most of you use for a food bag and what size is appropriate for your eating habits?

I have several different size Outdoor Research waterproof stuff bags that i'm considering, but i'm not sure yet which size to go with. Obviously, it comes down to how much food i'll be bringing (I'm still working on my menu), but any suggestions or good/bad experiences is welcome!

FYI: 10 Day section hike with a resupply in Harpers Ferry on the 5th day is what i'm aiming for.

I've been using a OR #2 which at times requires some creativity in packing.

I carry a 15L sil stuff sack for food. Then when it's time to bear bag, I put my food bag and my gf's food bag plus stove and garbage bag in my DIY sil pack liner and hoist away... Works very well, very convienent, and weather tight..

If you were a real man you'd just carry ten day's water too.

i use an old sleeping bag stuff sack for a food bag. i fill it up to the brim on longer hikes and hardly use 1/3rd of it on weekend hikes. but its nice to have the flexibility of enough space and not have to squish my precious cargo into unrecognizable morsels by having a bag that is too small.

Heck, if you were really a man, you'd just forage off the land. A large possum or small wolverine ought to do you for 10 days.:p

How many days with that full and how much weight?

The most I ever put in it is about 5 days. The bag is a homemade bag at 1.0 ounces. The food I put in it was probably about 12.5 pounds when it was full.

I've been using a OR #2 which at times requires some creativity in packing.

I use the OR hydroseal drycomp sacks for everything but food. For food, I use a waterproof sea to summit dry sack, which cinches at the top, and holds anything from 1 day to 20. Well, 20 if you stuffed.

Well, if he's section hiking, he could always swing by Harpers Ferry before his hike and leave 5 days worth of food with me. I probably will only eat the good stuff. Probably.

I had multiple food bags, which allowed me to put the food where it would fit best in my pack. My snacks for the day (including lunch etc. ended up in a mesh bag in the lid pocket where I could get at it.

I pulled some long legs on my hike (up to 10 days without resupply) and those really challenged the packing.

Seas to SUmmit ultralight Dry sack - 20Liters - 10X24 - 1.8oz. Carries 7 days easily with some of my kitchen and room to spare. Mountain Laurel Designs bag mentioned earlier holds about 15L and carriers 6 days or so of food in my experience and weighs about 5 grams less than S2S bag. Both good.

I just use the plastic grocery bags. Some times I double bag. They are light and get replaced with almost every resupply. I do how ever look for a restaurant every day...and some days I find one. I shouldn't need restaurants as much on this hike due to my hike being supported by a caterer.:)

Depends on my trip, obviously. Sometimes it's the green bag from the Wal-mart 3-pak, or if it is a trail where I'm going to have a base camp and make a lot of day-trips on the side I use an REI Flash UL.

I use ripstop nylon. No holes chewed through yet. Weighs 0.99 ounces since I replaced the cord lock with something smaller LOL.

FYI: 10 Day section hike with a resupply in Harpers Ferry on the 5th day is what i'm aiming for.

It's sort of a random question as some trips stretch out for 15 or 20 days w/o resupply and so we're talking about 2 or 3 food bags. I always carry two food bags, a "cookables" and a "snackables"; one to cook from and one to eat out of hand from. My third bag is an "overflow" thing which I place under the top lid of my pack--so my pack ends up towering over my head, etc.

I use the OR hydroseal drycomp sacks for everything but food. For food, I use a waterproof sea to summit dry sack, which cinches at the top, and holds anything from 1 day to 20. Well, 20 if you stuffed.

I too use OR sacks, the #5(30-35 liter), generally 3 on my longer trips. I like to eat.

My foodbag is so big it arrives at the shelter an hour before I do.

My two food bags are so big than when I tie them to my waist and walk around other backpackers think I have elephantiasis.
