I know there are some out there that are gonna grumble "why do you need music when you can listen to nature blah blah blah," which don't get me wrong, is satisfying to a point. But when you do bring your mp3 player, what's on it? I personally like Dispatch and Avett Brothers, or anything else earthy and acoustic.

Rarely do I listen to tunes on the trail, but when I do I have 16 gigs of tunes, pod casts, and audio books. I prefer blue grass while hiking from bill Monroe, string cheese incident, old crow medicine show, younder mountain string band, cornmeal, new monsoon, railroad earth. Sometimes it's fun to listen to micheal franti, knaan, Marley, bela fleck, pearl jam, screaming trees, and cracker. But for me nothing beats Phish.

I guess for a wintry hike Sigur Ros would be good. They've fused Iceland into their music somehow.

You rap haters are gonna love me...

When I'm jogging, nothing is better to my ears then TI's "Bring em out Bring em out." or most anything by Ludacris. It gets me going and puts a smile on my face.:D

If I'm cooking, I'll throw on some Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin.

If I'm chillin' or driving, I love some Bob Marley (really any reggae), Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, Spoon, MGMT...

But when I'm hiking. Nothing. Weird huh? I like to hear the leaves crunching underneath my boots, my dog breathing, I love the peaceful silence of the woods.

Audio books --- mind candy most typically, sci fi or the like.

Music: I think I mostly listen to the likes of Julieta Venegas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julieta_Venegas), La Quinta Estacion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinta_estacion), and Eva Amaral (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eva_Amaral). Just got a Nena Daconte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nena_Daconte) CD that I'm looking forward to listening to on the trail. I kind of like Wir Sind Helden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wir_Sind_Helden), but don't have anything by them (my MP3 player is pretty full up ...). I guess in particular I like stuff that's not on "Jack Radio", it's nice to have a wide variety --- not just of style/genre, but also of culture and "era". I think too many people focus their musical tastes based on what was popular when they were young, and where they happened to grow up. So I like to listen to Cowboy Junkies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_Junkies), or to a little old school Manhattan Transfer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manhattan_Transfer) now and again, switch from that to Dougie MacLean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dougie_MacLean) or Tannahill Weavers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tannahill_Weavers). Then listen to some Jethro Tull (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jethro_Tull_%28band%29), put on some Yerba Buena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_Buena_%28band%29), or David Mallet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Mallett), or (though I speak none of this language) Zdob Si Zdub (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zdob_%C5%9Fi_Zdub) ... there's just such an infinite number and variety of things to listen to (!).

I know it may seem kind of harsh, but I sometimes like to listen to Metallica while I hike (http://www.wildlandtrekking.com/adventurehikes/grandcanyonhiking.html). The came out with a version years ago where they played in Berkeley with the California State Orchestra, and it's amazing to hike to, ski to, climb to!

None (but I don't have an MP3 player - yet). When (if) I get one I will most likely listen to Christian Gospel (duh), Irish folk, and bluegrass. I'm not picky about artists, just the content of the lyrics and talent of the musicians.
Way back when I was a fan of all things 1970-ish, Led Zeppelin being the only band whose guitar licks I bothered to (try) to master. Now, on the trail or off, I usually play classical style guitar.

Nature sounds...keep them on the ipod.

Sometimes will be in the mood to listen to birds singing...but there won't be any birds around.

Or in the mood for a nice relaxing waterfall, but won't be camped near one...so i tune into that track.

And the real birds never sing good as the ones I got on my ipod anyway.....:sun

I've posted before in reference to an important difference between long-distance hikers and others. When hiking seemingly becomes someone's life, recreation becomes what others live every day.

Some people who haven't experienced it have a hard time wrapping their minds around the concept. The principle also applies to people who spend a summer working on the A.T. engaged in the work that makes it possible.

I do get it, but try to remember why you went out there in the first place. Listen to the birds and try to learn their songs too.

I totally agree, their new album sucks. They started getting bigger and listening to Cali music reps, which ultimately destroyed their sound. Hopefully they'll go back to being Emotionalism-esque after having so many bad reviews from fans.

Don't think I was naive in thinking that the first sentence in my original post would discourage a purist from piping up. Just thought it would decrease the amount of similar comments, which I guess so far, has been an success.

Keep em coming, what's your trail music?
